London: J. Callow, 1809. Second Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. 8vo. pp. vii, [1], 345, [1]. Pages are generally clean with occasional spots of marginal foxing. Edges of title page are age-toned. Book plate re-mounted on inside front cover belonging to Clements C. Fry, M.D. (1892-1955) Professor of Psychiatry at Yale and a well known collector of medical prints. Bound in full modern calf done after an early style. Old spine label is preserved. John Haslam (1764-1844) was an Apothecary or Medical Officer at Bethlem Hospital (Bedlam) and afterwards the Governor of St. Luke's Hospital. Haslam was one of the most knowledgeable practitioners in his field. However, according to Hunter and Macaplpine his attitudes toward patients were rather "harsh and unfeeling." In 1816 scandals arose over poor patient care at Bethlem Hospital and Haslam was dismissed from his position (perhaps unfairly). The "Observations on Madness" was first published in 1798. With 12 plates including 2 portraits of Rabelais and 10 scenes after the drawings of Devéria. Included also is the fold-out "carte du Chinonois" which, according to Brunet is not found in all copies. Volume IX ("les songes drolatiques") contains an additional title page, a facsimile of the 1565 title, and 120 full page woodcut grotesques, reproduced by Thompson after those in the original edition [Brunet]. This edition includes commentaries and notes by Jacob Le Duchat, Charles Esmangart, Éloi Johanneau, Volataire etc. Bound in period cat’s-paw calf boards with gilt double fillet borders, and board edge decoration; expertly re-backed with the spine displaying gilt raised bands, gilt labels and panels stamped in blind. The binding is generally fresh with only minor rubbing to the extremities. A bookplate is located on the inside front cover of each volume – "ex libris J.A. Steiner". A good example of publisher Jean Joseph Barbou's series of classics. Barbou's classics were designed in both their correctness and in their beauty to supplant the 17th century Elzevir publications. Endpapers are tastefully renewed with laid paper. The inside front cover displays a remounted 19th century bookplate, ("The Hope Trust 31 Moray Place, Edinburgh"). A modern bookbinder’s ticket is pasted on the inner rear cover. Interior pages show occasional minor wear and ageing but are generally clean. A single word on page 43 is lightly underlined in an early hand; the bottom marginal corner tips on pages 99 and 395 are clipped. Page 533/34 contains a 25 mm. tear - professionally sealed. Bartolomeo Platina (1421-1481) was an Italian scholar. During the pontificate of Pope Paul II (1417-1471) Platina and other humanists were dismissed from their positions in the Roman College.
