Description:
Philadelphia: Hughes & Gaskeill, Printers, 1850. 67, [2], [1, blank]pp. 3¾ x 2½ inches. Unlettered, black wraps. Foxing, tanning; else very good. Ephemeral and unrecorded mid-19th century mark publication of the By-Laws and Constitution of a benevolent Pennsylvania fraternal organization. A most interesting section within is between pages [54]-67 which detail the members' names, their method to obtain their daily bread, and I.O.O.F. admit dates. The occupations are of the mechanic-variety: printers, laborers, chair makers, varnishers, tobbaconist, mariner, saddle tree maker; the list of occupations is lengthy and diverse. Printed in small type. The name of Harry Norman is stamped inside the front cover, an early stamping; not modern, but we do not find his name listed within as a member. Unlisted in OCLC.

A rare and ephemeral New Orleans-printed broadside advertising this Reconstruction Era lottery. The commissioners are identified in the broadside as "G.T. Beauregard" and "J.A. Included with the broadside is an 1883 lottery ticket, The Louisiana State Lottery Co., The Monthly Five Dollar Drawing. This ticket is signed in type by Beauregard and Early. Unrecorded in OCLC.

Description:
[Columbus, Ohio: np (1870)]. Broadsheet. Approx. 8¾ x 4¾ inches. Light soil; one soft crease line; tiny perimeter chip; Very Good. 1870 broadsheet issued by the Ohio Colonization Society defending the colonization of African-Americans in Liberia and writing passionately of those "...having been torn from their own land, the greater proportion of them to die in slave ships..." and further proclaiming the "'right'" of those Blacks who wished to "...go to their fatherland, Africa, and to live and labor there for the firmer establishment of a negro nationality..." The text comprises a strongly-worded letter from Rev. B.F. Romaine, Corresponding and Financial Secretary of the Ohio Colonization Society, to George W. Gregg of Circleville, Ohio. The society was founded in 1827 to encourage Black Ohioans to emigrate to Africa. Now in the post-Civil War, "emancipation" era, Romaine is defensive about the continuing use of the term "colonization." He writes: "The old term "Colonization" has been continued in… Read More

[Chicago: Willkie War Veterans National Committee, [1940]. 16½ x 11½ inches. Half tone illustration. Typographical Union "bug" at lower left. Folds and faint creasing; small tears in margins at one seam line; very good. A 1940 presidential campaign poster for Wendell Willkie, the Democrat-turned-Republican activist and lawyer from Indiana. Here, American war veteran supporters of Willkie back his European interventionist policies, specifically in aid of France which had been invaded and subjugated by Nazi Germany in May and June 1940. The poster depicts a French soldier speaking about the power of voting and its necessity for freedom: "Once, I could vote, too! Once, like you, I was a free man! A Frenchman! Politicians made speeches to me, too! They spoke about our impregnable democracy. They told me what they were doing to protect my standard of living and my working conditions. They promised my family safety through preparedness. But they weren't honest with me! They let me down!... I was one of a… Read More

Description:
[America or England. Early 20th century.] Broadside. 11¼ x 6½ inches. Printed on newsprint; large half-tone portrait of Simon Smith. Folds, one closed tear, light creases; very good. Smiling Methodist evangelist Gipsy Simon Smith (1875-1943) looks out benevolently from this tall narrow broadside which advertises a performance to hear him give the good word ("Good Singing -Large Choir") at a Methodist Episcopal church in Coventryville. The attendance must have been substantial as "Churches, Societies, Lodges and Industrial Establishments" were requested to make advance reservations. An Englander, Smith came from humble beginnings, life in a gypsy camp in England, which led to a string of small petty crime. His conversion to Methodism came at aged 16 and, from that moment forward, taught himself to read and write. He began to practice preaching and became known as the singing gypsy boy when he began singing hymns. Smith's trajectory led to a close relationship with the Salvation Army and eventually to… Read More
