Description:
Garden City: Doubleday, Page, 1916. Hardcover. Very good/very good. 12mo, twelve volumes. A complete set of twelve volumes of the works of O. Henry in limp red leather, in the very scarce dust jackets. Leather somewhat worn or dried at the extremities, and the jackets are chipped at the spine ends, some moreso than others. Internally all volumes are lovely. Overall, a very good set. The only identification of this as a "set" is the presence of "Complete in Twelve Volumes" on the front panel of the dust jackets. Works include "Sixes and Sevens," "Whirligigs," "The Four Million," "The Trimmed Lamp," "Roads of Destiny," Options," and more. A search for any O. Henry title published by Doubleday, Page in 1916 turned up no results, indicating that these volumes are scarce in jackets.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1972. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/very good. Octavo, 637pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's black cloth. Slightly shaken, with the spine gently cocked, else a nice example. In a very good dust jacket with much of the original lamination perished, and some mild rubbing and chipping, most notably on the spine. Uncommon in the first printing, this is a comprehensive history of Jerusalem as a theater of the Israel-Palestine conflict from the British Mandate era through 1972.

Description:
Oberlin, Ohio: [Oberlin College?], 1856. First Edition. Very good. Single leaf on coated cardstock, measuring about 3" x 5". In very good condition, with a few thin scratches, with no loss to text. Rare and highly ephemeral program for the Young Men's Lyceum, a kind of literary society for Oberlin students. Six speeches, a discussion (or debate), and five breaks for music are noted in the program. Quite interesting is a speech on P. T. Barnum to be delivered by an S. Jay Buck of Mecca, Ohio. OCLC records no separate holdings of this program; broad searches in Oberlin's catalog also reveal no holdings. If Oberlin doesn't have it, then its certainly rare.

Paris: Garnier Freres, 1880. Hardcover. Very good. Folio, 2 volumes, complete. A very good set, bound in the publisher's red cloth, decorated in gilt. Spines of both volumes rebacked in black calf, with original spines laid down. New endpapers. Spines gently cocked, some curling to the fore-edges of the thin boards, and there is mild internal foxing; generally more severe towards the front and back of each volume. A perfectly example of this massive set, often found in significant disrepair.

Description:
[Cleveland]: Cuyahoga County Republican Party, 1897. First Edition. Staplebound. Near fine. 24mo, 48pp., illustrated. Near fine in the publisher's stapled wraps. Very mild creasing, but a niceple-preserved example. Highly ephemeral guide to Republican voters in the 1897-98 Ohio elections (at the state and local levels). After several pages of data relating to party members and voter turnouts in recent elctions, the main text consists of single-page biographies of various important Republcian candidates running for either statewide or Cuyahoga County-area office, with a photographic portrait of each Republican candidate. Of particular note is that of William H. Clifford, an accomplished Cleveland-born African-American civil servant who served in a number of administrative offices, most notably as State Representative in 1894-95 and (soon after the publication of this pamphlet) 1898-99. An ephemeral rarity; we note a single holding at Western Reserve Historical Society, and none in commerce or… Read More

Boston: Richard G. Badger / The Gorham Press, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 251pp. A very good copy in the publisher's red cloth, lacking the scarce dust jacket. Spine faded, gentle foxing to prelims, but a nice example. SIGNED by Parry with a generic inscription on the front paste-down. Per Coyle ("Ohio Authors and their Books"), Parry was an ambulance driver in World War I, then a treasurer in the manufacturing business, and later a commercial photographer. This novel--his only published effort-- "deals with the life of his father, Dr. John R. Parry of Woodsfield [OH], and also with his own war experiences." (Coyle, p. 484). Scarce in the trade, especially signed.

Description:
Ashtabula, Ohio: Telegraph" Book and Job Printing Office, 1868. First Edition. Sewn binding. Good. Octavo, 13, [1]pp. A good copy in the publisher's sewn binding with pale orange wraps. Staining and soiling to wraps, and a large but faint dampstain affecting almost the entirety of the page block. General wrinkling, but still overall a sound, legible, complete copy of this scarce rural Ohio imprint. Ashtabula, a Lake Erie town, was a known stop on the Underground Railroad, and the religious fervor which had traveled down to Ohio from the Burned-Over District in Western New York did much to stir the hearts of early Abolitionists in northeast Ohio in the decades preceding this pamphlet. Contents include the usual discussions of finances and other church business, there are also detailed discussions of church history. Though he is not mentioned by name, this group of Independent Baptists in Ashtabula County would have been the general milieu of Joshua Giddings, the firebrand Abolitionist Ohio… Read More

Description:
Columbus [Ohio]: Samuel Medary, Printer to the State, 1838. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good-. Thick octavo, 809pp., plus Appendices. A nearly very good, unrestored copy in contemporary marbled paper over boards with brown morocco spine and black spine label (done a bit amateurishly by the original binder, which we find appealing). Corners rounded, previous owner's stamp on the front paste-down, front free endpaper mostly detached, but holding. 20th-century notecard attached with paper clip to that same endleaf. Contents clean. Surprisingly rare compendium of the proceedings of Ohio's 37th General Assembly. Contents are diverse; there are motions to incorporate business and towns, approvals of plans for canals and roadways, and even occasional (brief) references to slavery and other political issues of the day. Though the title page is dated 1838, some of the recorded events are dated through part of 1839 (while this may be an error, the contents confirm that these are indeed the… Read More

Ohio City, Ohio: T. H. Smead, 1838. Sewn binding. Very good-. Octavo, pp. [33]-48. About very good in the publisher's grey printed side-sewn wraps. Sticker residue and contemporary owner's name to front wrap, with gentle internal foxing; still sound. A very uncommon imprint from Ohio City, now an in-town Cleveland neighborhood on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River. At the time, the two settlements were rival cities, and the conflicts between them led to very long delays in the building of bridges between them (several were blown up by anti-bridge extremists). This periodical contains various articles with advice for young women and mothers. The printer, T. H. Smead, published the first newspaper on the west side of the Cuyahoga, called the "Ohio City Argus." OCLC lists just a few other titles published by Smead, suggesting that he was not prolific beyond his periodicals. Ernest Wessen only had a partial run of this magazine once, in 1952, and he never had the Ohio City Argus listed in any… Read More

Description:
Medina COunty, Ohio: Ohio Farmers Insurance Company, 1875. Folded sheet. Very good. 16mo. Folded sheet, measuring about 3.25" x 5.5" when folded, and opening to about 19.5" x 5.5". Printed recto/verso. Very good, with typical dust-soiling to the front and rear panels, with a few tears at the folds; sound. A rare and wonderful little document of Ohio multicolor printing, which details the cash and assets on hand belonging to this Medina County, Ohio-based insurance company which exclusively catered to the needs of farmers. A detailed list of the paid-out claims takes up the entire verso , while the other side describes the company's strong financial backbone (which is what allows them to pay out claims). The to-the-penny payout details are worthy of study by anyone interested in the forensic accounting of farming or insurance concerns in 19th century Ohio. Highly ephemeral, unrecorded in OCLC, and naturally scarce in commerce.

[no place given]: [Republican Oarty?], 1880. Fine. One thin handbill, about 2.5" x 6.5", being a Republican Ticket for the Ohio state races, likely from about 1880. Amos Townsend is listed as the Republican candidate for Congress, and he served in the 20th district from 1877 to 1883, so this is likely for one of those races. In fine condition with atiny flattened crease at the bottom. Though nearly bereft of bibliographical information, we couldn't find any records for this handbill in OCLC, though these were produced in large numbers, and, while designed to be thrown away, we suspect there are at least a few floating around.

Description:
1950. Near fine. Two drawings, on sheets measuring about 11.25" x 14.25". The drawings are well-executed, and depict what we would now call stereotypical images of African-Americans in pastoral scenes. The verso of each image is titled in pencil, "Lomba Lou," and credited to Robbie Robison. Robison was a Pennsulvania-born cartoonist and illustrator who ultimately illustrated more than fifty children's books, a fact consistent with the stamp on the verso of these drawings, the "Julia Ellsworth Ford Foundation." That organization exist to promote children's literature, especially of the illustrated variety. An interesting rarity - it's difficult to find comparable examples in recent auction records.

Two of the drawings (one of which is made to look like the cover of Vogue magazine) appear to be depictions of the subject of the author's admiration. One of the poems reads, "Whenever the time/Wherever the place/I put other mens' visions/of you to disgrace/For in my lovelit eyes/--you see/You'll always be a/Ziegfield girl to me."
