Description:
Warsaw: Przeglad Tygodniowy,, 1873. Duodecimo (137 x 100 mm), pp. 132. Bound with 3 other works in contemporary roan-backed pebbled cloth, spine ruled and lettered in black. Ownership initials M.D. stamped at foot of spine. Last 2 leaves bound in twice; a very good copy. First edition in Polish of Mill's Utilitarianism (first, 1863), his important "definition of Utilitarianism, and a defence of the philosophy expressed by it" (MacMinn, et al.) The translator was the positivist philosopher, publicist, and jurist Feliks Bogacki (1847-1916). As stated on the title page, this Polish edition was authorized by Mill. Mill had been following closely the events in Poland of the 1860s, as his "Letter on Poland", published in the Penny Newsman for March 15 1863, demonstrates. It is "a discussion of the insurrectionary movement in Poland which, Mill maintains, is designed to return the lands to the peasants; [it] is popular in origin; and is, because it is a revolution, indicative of the commencement of a new… Read more

Description:
c.1961. Sheet size: 172 x 190 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. A cigar-smoking publisher watches as an elder lady signs a publishing contract. The caption has been erased. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Description:
1918. Octavo. Original yellow wrappers, titles to front and rear, edition label to front wrapper as issued. Housed in a black flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Chipping to spine backing, light creasing and nicks at wrapper extremities, front wrapper expertly reattached, splits to rear joint ends. A very good copy. First edition with the unexpurgated original text, the second overall following a substantially censored first edition in 1915. Before the 1917 revolution Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893-1930) had been a "regular scandal-maker" (his own words) of the Futurist school, but by 1918 his revolutionary voice found endorsement in this uncensored edition of his key poem and first major work. The poem was composed in a fit of frustrated love for artist Maria Denisova, imploding into a rage at the world. His introduction touts the text as a "catechism for contemporary art", and restores his titles for each of the previously unnamed quadrants of the work: "Down with your love", "Down with your… Read more

Description:
La Plata: , 1906. Octavo. Original grey wrappers with titles in black and red to front. Housed in a custom red cloth folding case. Wrappers partially chipped from the spine but the book nonetheless sound, extremities somewhat chipped and creased with some toning and faint spotting to the wrappers, but a fair copy. First edition, sole impression, of this scarce first instalment in the works of Argentine poet Pedro B. Palacios (1854-1917, who wrote as "Almafuerte"). This is a superb association copy with the ownership inscription of his Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) to the first blank. Borges in his early career, before turning to short stories in the 1940s, considered himself primarily a poet and literary critic. He was a devotee of Almafuerte and praised him in Evaristo Carriego (1930), also listing him in his prologue of the Antologia Poetica Argentina (1941) as one of the most important Argentine poets. Lamentaciones was the first publication in a projected ten volume series, all instalments of… Read more

Oxford: Printed by Hen: Hall for Thomas Robinson,, 1658. Challenging Francis Bacon's theory of the descent of sap Small quarto (198 x 150 mm), pp. 46. Early 20th-century tan calf by Riviere and Son, spine lettered in gilt, gilt roll tool turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Woodcut head-pieces and initials. Light rubbing to calf, patch of abrasion to front endpaper, a few instances of light soiling to contents, small hole through A4 (touching a few letters), paper flaw at foot of final leaf (clear of letterpress). A very good, well-margined copy, complete with the single leaf "Table" at the end. First edition. Ralph Austen (c. 1612-1676) is a fascinating figure, a combination of self-taught gardener and religious radical, whose "approach to horticulture was innovative, experimental, and sceptical of the authority of theorists" (ODNB).
