During this cruise, Shackleton met Cedric Longstaff, the son of Llewellyn W. Longstaff. The latter pledged £25,000 to Markham's scheme for a British expedition to Antarctica. It was on the recommendation of Llewellyn's son, Lieutenant Cedric Longstaff, that Shackleton was made the third officer for the Discovery Expedition. First edition in Polish of Mill's Utilitarianism (first, 1863), his important "definition of Utilitarianism, and a defence of the philosophy expressed by it" (MacMinn, et al.) The translator was the positivist philosopher, publicist, and jurist Feliks Bogacki (1847-1916). As stated on the title page, this Polish edition was authorized by Mill. Mill had been following closely the events in Poland of the 1860s, as his "Letter on Poland", published in the Penny Newsman for March 15 1863, demonstrates. It is "a discussion of the insurrectionary movement in Poland which, Mill maintains, is designed to return the lands to the peasants; [it] is popular in origin; and is, because it is a revolution, indicative of the commencement of a new era in the downtrodden countries of Europe" (MacMinn, Hainds & McCrimmon, p. 94). Mew (1929-2018) was Popper's assistant from 1982. "In addition to secretarial work, this also meant translation work, the organization of everyday life for the recently widowed philosopher as well as accompanying him on trips all over the world to lectures, congresses and awards. Karl Popper had become a member of the Mew family" (obituary, Universität Klagenfurt website, accessible online, translated). London: John Miller and John Murray,, 1812. First and only edition of Malcolm's defence of his actions during the "White Mutiny" among the officers of the Madras Army. Sparked by the abolition of the "tent contract" moneys for controlled by regimental commanding officers, but fed on accumulating grievances in the East India Company's military the mutiny led to a near complete breakdown of order in the army in southern India. Malcolm successfully suppressed the rising at one particularly disturbed garrison, but his methods stirred controversy typical of the Byzantine workings of the Company. Sir George Barlow, governor of Madras, sent to Malcolm to Marsulipatam where the garrison had revolted.
