Moskva: Tipografiia Sablina, 1911. Paperback. Fine. Original printed wraps; 4to; pp. 152. Aside from some very gentle rubbing along the edges, book is fine. Only one title by Leont'ev appears in Kilgour, 820, from 1876.

Contemporary dark brown specked calf, ornate border gilt-stamped on boards, gilt-stamped lettering in black leather spine label, gilt-stamped ornament on spine; 12mo; pp. 22, [2], 116, with vignette illustrations throughout (etchings by Gardiner after drawings by Harding). Some light scuffing along spine and edges of boards, otherwise binding is lovely. Text block a bit age-toned throughout, with some off-setting of etchings onto facing pages. Armorial bookplate of John Mark Gourgas. A pretty little book, and uncommon.

Written in the right-hand column with notes and diagrams in pencil and ink in the left column. (Fading to first part, some minor staining, a few quires becoming disbound.) 18th-century paste-paper covered boards (worn). A series of astronomy lectures presumably in Oriani’s hand, with a note on the front free endpaper from Professor Rossi attributing the manuscript to Oriani. Comprising some 36 lessons with additional information about physics and astronomy at the end, likely delivered to his students at the college of Brera. Oriani studied astronomy under Joseph Louis Lagrange and was ordained a priest in 1776. He joined the Jesuit-operated Brera Observatory and was later appointed by Napoleon as director of the Milan Observatory in 1802. Moscow: Sinodal’naia tipografiia, 1902. Hardcover. Fair. “With the blessing of the Most Holy Governing Synod.” The Obikhod is the standard liturgical book of the Orthodox Church. Although the words on the title page are mostly in Russian and not in Church Slavonic, the script is the old-style Cyrillic in use before Peter I. This is typical of publications of the Russian Orthodox Church to the present day, as is the rendition of numbers (in this case, the year of publication) using Cyrillic letters. Old leather binding, very worn, with piece missing from spine. A good copy internally.

Paris: Mourlot Freres, 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Copy 9 of 300 examples, signed by Eluard and the artist, Engel-Pak, slipcased with a second copy, an out-of-series proof, unsigned, but with an original drawing for the title drawn by Engel-Pak on thin paper and initialled (design not used), hand-lettered by Eluard, and with three additional sheets hand-lettered by Eluard for the title, the colophon, and a plate list (this last also unused). Housed in two chemises within a vellum-backed slipcase. 12 3/4 x 9 1/4 inches (32.5 x 23.5 cm); 16 sheets printed in color lithography; plus the additional material noted above in the second copy, which is printed on paper 1 cm taller than the published work. This is likely a participant's copy, possibly Eluard's own.

Original grey cloth, lettering stamped in silver on spine, in blind on upper board; dust jacket printed in grey and blue. Spine tips and corners bumped; ownership markings on rear paste-down; some very light foxing here and there. Dust jacket torn and heavily chipped, but uncommon, and not too shabby in mylar.

The concept of medical police is quite interesting in the context of urban social history. The "police" focused on everything for occupational hazards to prostitution, abandoned children, and public safety such public alcoholism and toxins and poisons that could be an immediate hazard to public heath. David Hosack was noted American physician but remains "widely known as the doctor who tended to the fatal injuries of Alexander Hamilton after his duel with Aaron Burr in July 1804" His second wife was the wealthy widow of the merchant and shipowner Henry A. Coster, and brought $300,000 and seven children from her earlier marriage into the Hosack household.
