Description:
Square 8vo, period tree calf, morocco spine label, illustrated with folding table and 60 copper engravings, [8], 70 pp. Covers a bit worn, faint touch of old dampstain to leather, occasional foxing; very good to near fine. The present volume is a rare officer’s manual from the Napoleonic era. The translator preface states that it is “translated from a work which was published at Berlin, under the auspices of General Czetteritz, without any date; but it is supposed to have been written a few years subsequent to the piece of 1763.” In his “History of Frederick the Great” (1858-65) Carlyle presents a story of the capture of General Czetteritz and the lost of a “secret manuscript” which found its way to publication in London in 1762 as “Military Instructions by the King of Prussia.” Several editions were published under that title. The detailed copper plates depict hypothetical series of military engagements, each with accompanying letterpress legend and instructions for deploying troops.

Description:
Souvenir pamphlet, 8vo, colored printed pictorial wrappers, illustrated, [16], pp. Folded and creased down the middle, with a little wear at the fold, some minor rubbing to wrappers, normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a scarce piece of ephemera commemorating the 1911 groundbreaking ceremony by President William H. Taft for the exhibition in the Golden Gate Park. While the purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, it seemed to function more as a worlds fair held in San Francisco. It took over three years to construct, and the exhibition ran from February through December 1915. There are a number of black and white photographs in the booklet, including a double page panoramic view of the city of San Francisco. The activities of the ceremony are recorded in this pamphlet, which feature speakers, songs, marches, and what they had for dinner

Description:
Pamphlet 8vo, early wrappers, restitched 3-40 pp. Lacks title page, but facsimile on what appears to be early paper is provided. Tattered, wrappers somewhat rough, and some dampstaining and soiling, edges rough and with corner folds. But in about good condition overall. Notation on back of title page indicates this copy may have come from the Connecticut Historical Society. This is a rare tract (OCLC appears to locate few if any hard copies), and the fourth and fifth editions reflect significant rewriting from the earlier editions. In fact, the section on the Rights and Liberties of Africans was probably not in the earlier editions. That material was added after an address on "A Few Strictures on Liberty of Conscience’ delivered at the public school of Boston. Clearly the last eight pages of this pamphlet are the most important because of its focus on the rights of African Americans. In addition to condemning slavery, Allen takes it a step further by stating that slave revolts are both inevitable… Read More
