Description:
Aarau: Druck und Verlag von H. R. Sauerländer, 1855 First edition. Small octavo. [4], 364, [1]pp. Publisher's original yellow pictorial wrappers, printed in black. Just a hint of occasional foxing, slight soiling to wrappers, but a very fine, uncut and unread copy. Very rare in this original condition. This is perhaps the finest copy extant. "A series of 'word pictures' of lasting import" (Wheat). This rare work was later translated into English as Bound for Sacramento, Saunders Studio Press, 1938. The author, a highly educated man, closely observes the phenomena of Gold Rush days in California. His theories, though antiquated, throw a fresh light on those frantic days. "Born in Germany, Meyer left for New Orleans in February 1849, bound for the Isthmus of Panama... arrived in Monterey in the spring... His summaries of the last vestiges of Mexican California are all choice. His descriptions encompass a Mexican caravan on its way to the Mariposa diggings, geology of the… Read More

London: : H. Fisher, Son, and P. Jackson, 1826 First edition. Rare, especially in this condition. Pp. [10], 3-442. Folding frontis map, 7 engraved plates. Newly bound in 2007 in light greenish-tan boards, brown silk cloth spine, gilt-lettered leather spine label. An exceptional copy, very fine, tall, clean throughout and with the text block untrimmed! Ellis was an early Protestant missionary to the Polynesian Islands, especially in the Society and Hawaiian Islands. This Narrative is "particularly important, as it was the first book written about the Hawaiian Islands and the first serious notice of the Islands since Captain Cook's discovery of them forty-eight years earlier. It may be called the scientific book on Hawaii: although its main purpose was to report on mission progress, and Ellis was primarily interested in local manners and traditions, he was sufficiently expansive to include observations on such natural and cultural topics as volcanoes, antiquities, and the anthropology of the… Read More
