St. Gall, Ruprecht Weniger for the author, 1740. Title printed in red and black. With richly figured engr. frontispiece by Jacob Gottlieb Thelot, and engr. folding map of canton Appenzell by Gabriel Walser, in contemp. handcoloring. 8 unn. leaves, 752 pp., 112 pp. appendix. 8vo. Contemp. leather with gilt spine label (some repairs). St. Gall, Ruprecht Weniger for the author, 1740. First edition of the main work of Gabriel Walser (1695-1776). He considered it as a continuation of the chronicle of Bischoffberger which leads up to 1682; the present "Neue Chronick" stops in 1732, when political events took place that he was not allowed to comment upon, being himself involved. While he still considerd history to be a mirror of God's omnipotence, he based a lot of information on his own research and experience; his topographical descriptions were the result of explorations, as was his map, published here for the first time and for years to come the basis for the mapping of the region.
