Thirteen plates, one colored by hand and large fold-out frontispiece map, plus half title and publisher adverts. An Irish born English naval officer captured by the French on a voyage from St. Helena in 1805, he suffered an imprisonment of nearly nine years. Promoted to rank of commander in 1814, he was later assigned to lead an expedition to explore the Congo River in 1816 to learn if there was a connection between the Congo and Niger basins. Most of the crew including Tuckey succumbed to tropical fever or exhaustion and died in their efforts. Whereas the expedition failed it inspired interest by the British to continue African exploration. The accounts of the expedition gleaned from officer's reports, incomplete journals, etc., provided useful information on the natural history and inhabitants of the region. WOOD p. 603.… Read More

Description:
Nanking: Museum of The Institute of History and Philology, 2002. First edition. Stiff Wraps. Orig. illustrated stiff wrappers. 329 pages. 27.5 x 21.5 cm. The museum has over 400,000 items in its permanent collection, making it one of the largest in China. Especially notable is the museum's enormous collections of Ming and Qing imperial porcelain, which is among the largest in the world. Preparatory Office for the Academia Sinica Museum was established in 1933. Dr. Fu Ssu-nien envisioned the museum as a center for educating the public, promoting society's interest in cultural heritage and broadening the historical horizons of common citizens. By associating the artifacts with their relevant natural history, the museum differed considerably from other museums which simply displayed their collections out of context. Some of the Museum's contents were sent to Taiwan during the Japanese invasion of China. Profusely illustrated with color plates. Text in English and Chinese.
