Description:
1825 NAPOLEON Bonaparte 1ed Grand Army Russia Baron Gourgaud Comte de Segur Duel

Gaspard, Baron Gourgaud's work, "Napoleon and the Grand Army in Russia," critically examines and counters the narrative presented by Phillipe Paul, Comte de Segur, in his portrayal of Napoleon during the 1812 Russian campaign. Serving as Napoleon's principal orderly officer and close confidant, Gourgaud leverages his firsthand experiences and extensive diary entries to challenge Segur's account, accusing him of factual inaccuracies, distorted storytelling, and blending unrelated events. The dispute between the two escalated to a duel, resulting in an injury to Segur.

This edition of Gourgaud's book not only provides a meticulous critique of Segur's work but also includes a substantial 54-page appendix, detailing various orders issued by Napoleon during that year, thereby offering a comprehensive and authoritative alternative perspective on the events of 1812.

1856 1ed Narrative of Expedition American Squadron Perry Hawkes JAPAN China MAPS

First and only complete edition of Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition!

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"

The events of this expedition were recorded by Perry and Francis Hawks in the 1856 account "Narrative of the Expedition of an… Read More

1827 1st ed Imprisonment INQUISITION Juan Van Halen TORTURE Voyages Caucasus
A Spaniard of Dutch heritage, Juan Van Halen (1788-1864) entered the Spanish navy in 1803, sailing to Cuba and Mexico. In 1808 he became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, first fighting for the Spanish, then briefly joining the French after being taken prisoner, and finally returning to the Spanish side, boldly fooling the French into surrendering three forts by dressing as a French officer and presenting forged documents announcing a treaty. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Escaping to Russia, he spent 18 months as a colonel in the Caucasus Dragoon Regiment under General Yermalov in Tblisi, Georgia.

Despite some likely fictional elements, this1827 account of his adventures is generally regarded as based in truth. British traveler and scholar John Frederick Baddeley describes it as "one of the best of the early… Read More

Description:
1874 1ed Confederate General Joseph E Johnston Civil War Narrative CSA Military
Joseph E. Johnston was a 19th-century American Army officer who served as a Confederate States Army general, even though he trained at West Point. However, his military acumen was wrecked and constantly criticized by Confederate President Jefferson Davis – with whom Johnston was very displeased. Following his service time as a military officer, Johnston wrote and published his own memoirs – memoirs which were mostly attacks on President Davis and other officers, as well as defending his own actions and decisions during the Civil War.

'In Tall Cotton' says of this work:
"A vigorous defense of his own actions and necessarily, therefore, a hard-hitting attack on others, particularly on President Davis against whom he records his objections to excess."

According to Nevins, this work is
"one of the earliest Confederate reminiscences; strongly partisan, anti-Davis, and defensive in tone."

1877 Confederate CSN Capt Wilkinson 1ed Narrative of Blockade-Runner Civil War

Confederate Naval Captain John Wilkinson's "The Narrative of a Blockade-Runner" is a fascinating 19th-century first-hand account that provides a detailed narrative on blockade-running during the American Civil War. In addition to chronicling the experiences of smuggling goods through the Union's naval blockade, the book also offers insights into significant events such as the controversial capture of New Orleans. Through access to previously unpublished documents, Wilkinson presents a fresh perspective on these historical events. The book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the war and to promote dialogue between the North and South.

Dixon Denham was a 19th-century English explorer who is best known for his short-lived career as governor of Sierra Leonne. Description:
1842 William Paley Natural Theology Christian Apologetics Science Philosophy
A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. Significantly influenced by naturalist John Ray's work, Paley further developed Ray's ideas by proposing that the oft-observed complex adaptations seen in plants and animals were evidence of benevolent divine design. Notably, this work is also the origin of the "watchmaker analogy" a now, well-known, and commonly used teleological argument.
This rare, illustrated edition includes the highly-desired companion collection of 40 engraved plates by James Paxton that were originally independently published in 1826.
