Description:
Nice condition vintage copy of "NAKED LUNCH" by William S. Burroughs. 1959 1st edition, 12th printing (stated); Grove Press; New York. From a review: "(The book) tells the story of a drug addict's bizarre experiences in a dreamlike landscape, which is populated by grotesque creatures known as Mugwumps, and where taboo acts such as rape and murder are committed constantly with no consequences. 'Naked Lunch' is one of the best-known works by William S. Burroughs, largely due to its reputation as one of the most 'obscene' pieces of literature ever published. Burroughs was even taken to court over it, but his eventual victory in that trial actually played a key role in the overturning of American obscenity laws."Condition:Clean covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are clean with only a small, light stain (foxing spot?) at the outer edge of the front and rear blank end paper. Name/address/phone… Read More

"THE NEW SPIRIT" by Havelock Ellis with its original dust jacket. 1935; National Home Library; Washington, D.C. From the dust jacket: "Havelock Ellis is one of the greatest of English essayists. In this book, a renowned masterpiece, he makes us feel the very spirit of the daring men who refused to accept 'things as they are' and threw off the shackles of bigotry and ignorance to which the multitudes were bound for ages before them. He writes of DIDEROT, the inspiring and creative thinker, of HEINE, the poet and 'Soldier of Humanity,' of TOLSTOY, the reformer and champion of the oppressed, of HUYSMANS, of IBSEN, and of WALT WHITMAN. No library is complete without this representative work of a truly great mind." The dust jacket comes with a clear, protective sleeve (not shown). Description:
"New Writing" - Volume 2. Autumn 1936; John Lane the Bodley Head; London. This edition contains the first appearance of the essay "Shooting an Elephant" by GEORGE ORWELL. The essay describes the experience of an English narrator (possibly Orwell himself) called upon to shoot an aggressive elephant while working as a police officer in Burma. Because the locals expect him to do the job, he does so against his better judgment, his anguish increased by the elephant's slow and painful death. The story is regarded as a metaphor for British imperialism, and for Orwell's view that "when the white man turns tyrant it is his own freedom that he destroys." Please see the photos for the complete list of contents.Condition:Light soiling to the covers and spine. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Description:
"NEW YORK BEAUTIFUL" by Wallace Nutting with its original dust jacket. 1936 1st edition; Garden City Publishing Co.; New York. The book is richly illustrated with black & white photographs throughout. From the dust jacket: "From the mighty thunder of majestic Niagara to the serene sweep of the stately Hudson, within the boundaries of the great State of New York lies an extraordinary variety of magnificent scenery. In the North the lofty Adirondacks reach rugged spires to the sky; in the South the Palisades hem with a volcanic wall the inner shore of America's Rhine. Centrally lie the ragged Finger Lakes, fed by the rushing torrents of the northern hills, and eastward spread the broad expanses of Lakes George and Champlain, great bodies of blue water that early voyagers mistook for undiscovered seas. The friendly Catskills, whose wooded fastnesses still breathe the fabled fold-lore of the early Dutch, release their gentle northward slopes to cattle and the plowing fields of man, and rolling hills… Read More

Marbled page edges on all sides.Condition:Wear to the corners; there is a small piece of paper adhered to the top of the spine. Tight binding with no loose pages; crack at the front hinge after the half title page (despite the crack, the front cover is firmly attached and is not shaky). The text pages are in very good condition - mostly clean with only a few random light smudges/stains found; the end papers have darker stains at the outer corners. Overall the book is in very good condition.
