Description:
(Albuquerque): Big Mountain Support Committee, 1980. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good. Quarto, [7]pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's stapled wraps. Bottom staple a bit off-center (misapplied by the binder); still a sound copy, a bit wrinklyed and with an old inked price on the front wrap. Scarce volume which recounts the recent history of a "land dispute" between Hopi and Navajo Indians (together) against the US government, which was constructing a fence through their ancestral lands on the border of Arizona and New Mexico at the behest of energy companies. Historical background is provided, along with exhortations for help from sympathetic readers. Specifically, the document provides the contact information for both Arizona senators, one of whom was Barry Goldwater. Goldwater had a reputation as being very sympathetic to Native Americans in general, but took the energy companies' (and Federal Government's) side on this issue (so much for… Read More

Description:
New York: Bangs, Merwin & Co, 1875. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 393pp., including list of realized prices, bound at the end of the catalogue. A very good example, modestly rebound in ble cloth with gilt title, retaining original wrappers. Sound and clean, with some old dust-soiling to the original wrappers, and a repaired chip to the rear wrapper (which consists of a wonderful advertisement for Sabin's Bibliotheca Americana). Contents clean and sharp, unmarked but for the occasional stray light pencil mark. We did not find any other example in commerce at present which are bound with the realized price list. An historic, landmark sale of books relating to Native Americans.

Description:
[no place, likely Herkimer County, NY]: [no imprint], 1890. String-bound. Fine. Oblong 12mo, unpaginated [10pp.], blank. About fine in the original brown wraps, tied with leather string, as issued. Front wrap illustration done by hand in three colors, depicting a feather, and with the title in cascading pattern. Only the most trivial nicks to extremities. A vanishingly scarce little volume by this obscure writer from Herkimer County, New York. "Winona" is a talel of star-crossed lovers--a Mohawk woman and a "pale face" man--that ends in a (literal) lover's leap. Winona's father, the tribal chief, is deeply against this romance, and arranges for her marriage to a fellow tribesman named Deer Foot. She will have none of it, and runs off to live with the "pale face" in the woods. Her vengeful father and his tribesmen find them, and corner them at the edge of a cliff, at which point the lovers jump off the ledge into the rushing water below. The author notes that these events took place more than a… Read More

Description:
[no place, likely Buffalo]: [no publisher given -- Baker, Jones & Co.?], 1901. First Edition. Softcover. Very good +. 12mo, 96pp., illustrated. A crisp, clean copy, fresh and sound, with loss to the spine, else quite nice; very good or better. An extremely uncommon and well-illustrated history of the Native American tribes of Western New York. Though not expressly indicated as such, this pamphlet was certainly produced in advance of the Pan-American Exposition. A kind of dedication page bears a portrait of A. L. Benedict, MD, who was the Superintendent of Ethnology and Archaeology of the Pan-American Exposition. The numerous illustrations, may from contemporary photographs, depict aged Indigenous members of the Cayuga, Cattaraugus, and other tribes in the region. Images of longhouses, homes, and portraits enrich the text. While clearly written from a patronizing perspective, the pamphlet does convey the enduring reality of Native life in this long-"conquered" region of western New York. To this day,… Read More

Description:
[Berkeley]: [People's Park Negotiating Committee and others], 1969. Very good +. 21 leaflets or handbills, mimeographed or offset printed on variously-colored stocks, and all measuring 8.5" x 11". Condition varies, with occasional toning or flattened folds, but mostly very good or better. Two examples printed on yellow paper show more wear, having obviously spent some time on a telephone pole, with some insect damage and corner tears, but still generally complete. A rich collection of hastily produced leaflets, most of which date to May and June, 1969 (a few are as late as September). The area in question, People's Park, had been just recently opened, and was owned by UC-Berkeley. The university quickly developed plans to convert the land into a sports facility, though the space had already become a haven for campus radicals and free speech activists, following the tradition of Mario Savio and the Free Speech Movement just half a decade earlier on the same campus. As the students began to dig their… Read More

Description:
(Menlo Park, CA): The Free You / Midpeninsula Free University, 1968. First Edition. Staplebound. Very good. Quarto, 60pp., illustrated. Very good in the publisher's stapled wraps, with even soiling/foxing to the wraps and some curling to the corners, but mostly clean internally, apart from some neat inked checkmarks on the course selection page. A scarce and vibrant course catalog for the Midpeninsula Free University, an experiment in radical education which lasted a few years in the late 1960s in the Bay Area. Among the fundamental drivers of the New Left counterculture in the mid-1960s was the critique of higher education as a mere tool of the ruling class to exploit the minds of young people for their own ends. The MFU was one of the more successful experiments in the movement, although it fizzled out by the early 1970s. Many dozens of courses are explained herein, and they range from the very serious and political ("Marxism-Leninism and the American Revolution") to the groovy… Read More

Description:
[New York], 1939. Near fine. Eight photographic prints (seven unique images), whose contents mostly measure about 7" x 9" or slightly smaller, and printed on 8" x 10" paper. The artistic and well-composed images capture the spirit of the futuristic 1939 World's Fair, with it's large, minimalist edifices and bright lights. Generally quite well-preserved, in near fine condition overall. Would frame well, and be at home in the collection of any World's Fair collection.

Description:
Raleigh, NC: J. Gales & Son / Raleigh Register, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Octavo, 540pp. A good copy, bound in contemoprary full sheep, with much-faded spine label. Spine worn at the base, spotting and soiling to extremities, some uneven age-toning internally, and occasional dampstaining, but still a sound, otherwise clean copy, with no restoration. An important legal reference, filled with examples of forms and documents to be used by justices of the peace and notaries in the state of North Carolina in the late-1830s, and based on all of the most recent statues and laws of the state. The contents are well-organized, providing the text of various laws, followed by forms, and then some "adjudged cases." Chapter CXI (pp. 450-469) is entitled "Slaves and Free Persons of Color," and it describes in harrowing detail the legal position Black people in North Carolina. Various punishments for slaves who break laws are described, most of these consisting of "thirty-nine lashes." Among these… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: William F. Geddes, 1832. First Edition (?). Sewn binding. Very good +. Octavo, 28pp., plus 4pp. "Epitaph" at rear. A rare untrimmed copy in the original fragile sewn wrappers. Wrappers chipped, with some scrunching on the rear wrap, but a sound, if fragile copy. Overall very good or better. Small stamp (appears to be contemporary) on the front wrap, next to a contemporary inked name. Contents clean and bright. A very scarce probable first edition of this impassioned plea by the aging Matthew Carey (though the work is not credited, he signed the Preface) against allowing South Carolina to nullify existing federal tariffs within its state borders. This crisis, which was resolved through negotiation, nevertheless acted as a kind of dress rehearsal for the war over slavery's expansion into new states and territories; a tense back-and-forth which of course resulted in the American Civil War. At rear is a tongue-in-cheek "epitaph" for the Constitution of the United States, clearly written by… Read More

Description:
[no place, likely Cleveland]: [no publisher], 1845. Staplebound. Very good. 12mo, pp. [127]-136, illustration with a vignette of some ships on wavy Lake Erie on the final leaf. Very good in the original stapled binding, with a few very short tears to extremities. Seemingly extracted from "Peet's General Business Directory of the Cities of Cleveland & Ohio for the Years 1845-6." We matched the contents and pagination of our extract to a digital copy of the book, and there are only some small typographical differences. These may be variations typical of frontier publishing of the period, or they could be evidence that the extract was printed separately. It seems worth noting that the extract with this caption title is catalogued in NUC (0052790), and also catalogued separately by two institutions in OCLC (Cleveland PL and WRHS). A concise and wonderfully detailed list of the tradesmen and laborers of Ohio City, now an intown Cleveland neighborhood, but at the time a separate municipality and a rival… Read More

New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1839. First Edition. Hardcover. Good +. Octavo, 195pp. A good or better copy in the publisher's green blind-stamped cloth. Boards somehwat worn and faintly soiled. Internally clean with a few scant markings to the endpapers (no library markings). Some present but mild dampstains to the page block. The author was the son of John Montgomery, an Irish-born Boston merchant, who had relocated to Spain. The younger Montgomery was educated in England, and worked as a diplomat for the United States. Uncommonly worldly for his time, this tome recounts the author's travels through Guatemala during the period immediately following the establishment of hte Monroe Doctrine. While known to libraries, this is a scarce volume in the trade, having last appeared at auction in 1997, and selling well over the high estimate. Sabin 50139.
