Description:
Jonathan Cape. 8vo., two-tone cloth, spine in green, lettered in gilt with publisher's device to foot; upper edge stained red; textured endpapers; in the printed dust jacket (30s. net), with a photograph of the author to the lower panel; pp. [vi], 7-252, [iv]; a fine copy, the foot of spine perhaps a fraction knocked; in the very good dust jacket which is a little rubbed to spine tips. First edition of the author's first book, this copy complete with a card signed by the author in blue ink, with his photograph pasted to the lower corner. A previous owner has written a short bio in pencil to the verso. Morris, formally the curator of Mammals at London Zoo, first published The Naked Ape as a series of articles in The Daily Mirror. Because of its focus on man's sexual selection in human evolution, the book was perhaps unsurprisingly banned by certain schools in America, and even became the subject of a U.S. Supreme Court Case. The work has since been translated into 23 languages. .… Read More

Description:
John Calder. London: John Calder, 1964  8vo., original camel-coloured publisher's boards, backstrip lettered in gilt, with publisher's device to foot; together in the original unclipped dust jacket (42s.), featuring a photograph of the author with red eyes to the upper panel; pp. [v], 2-251, [i]; a little pushing to spine tips; with a couple of small spots and slight lean to the text block; a crisp copy, otherwise; the dust jacket toned and a little shelf worn, with small nicks to edges, particularly affecting head of spine; and one small closed tear (2.5cm approx) neatly repaired internally with archival tape; very good.  First UK edition, originally published in Paris by the Olympia Press in 1959.  The Naked Lunch can reasonably be described as Burrough's best-known work. The drug-and-sex-fuelled narrative, written in a series of vignettes, was designed to be read in any order, and became incredibly popular during the beatnik period of the 1960s. Unsurprisingly,… Read More

Description:
Samuel Hornsey. In 1836 fishermen began snagging their nets on the seabed in the Solent. A diver from Gosport, Henry Abbinett was hired by them to investigate what was down there. He was the first to see the wreckage of the Royal George and then in the distance, Tudor flagship, The Mary Rose. He brought in two experienced divers, John Deane, and William Edwards. They had more advanced kit and in particular breathing apparatus that they had honed initially for firefighting. They recovered several timbers from both wreckage sites and a bronze gun from the Mary Rose. Rumblings were afoot between the parties as the fishermen, Abbinett and the two divers all laid claim to ownership of what they recovered. The Admiralty had to step in at this point. Admiral Codrington was Commander in Chief Portsmouth and made the decision that the two divers could claim ownership of most of what they recovered, with a percentage going to other parties. In 1840 they continued and with help used explosives to dislodge the… Read More

Description:
William Heinemann. First edition published by William Heinemann in 1932. This is a stunning very near fine copy. The remarkable jacket, illustrated by Youngman Carter has very little wear at all. There is a tiny amount of wear to the bottom of the spine, the spine is toned and there are a couple of light creases to the inside flap. The book has a smattering of foxing marks but otherwise is in excellent condition. There is a very small previous booksellers label on the inside board. The book is in exceptional condition and for this reason is very rare.   . Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1932.
