Two volumes bound in one, iv + 78pp, and 232pp, signed and numbered 'Eliz Scrope. No 1244,' on the last leaf, full early calf, raised bands, rubbed, top board held by strings. Gervase Scrope was the father of Elizabeth Scrope. He had accused Cresswell of several things including bigamy. Scrope was eventually proved right as Cresswell had married a wealthy heiress, Miss Anne Warneford, grand-daughter of Sir Edmund Warneford of Sevenhampton and Bibury, Gloucestershire, a few years after his marriage to Elizabeth. Cresswell was elected Member of Parliament for Wootton Bassett from 1754 to 1774. c1730. . Manuscript poem attacking Walpole's conciliatory policies against Spain. Begins by proposing a copper plate showing 'three English Saylors' drawing a Spanish dustcard, the British lion rearing up to attack but 'Sir R. W...le' pulling him back by the tail. 12 verses of 9 lines each, presenting the government as kow- towing to and appeasing 'Don Diego'. Mentions 'Hosier the brave', Admiral Francis Hosier, who as Vice Admiral at the blockade of Porto Bello in 1726 was ordered not to fight the Spanish and take the port: 'When our Fleets were equipped you must certainly know/By him they were hindred from striking a blow/Thus Hosier the brave/Was sent to his grave/On an Errand that better had fitted a slave'. On four sides folio, in a neat hand, with some amendments. The second page has some wear and splits which have been repaired with archival tape. Small compass rose, scale bar (4 furlongs = half a mile). 2" repaired tear at right edge. The River Avon runs along the bottom of the map. Extends to Harley Place in Clifton, the Turnpike at Cotham Hill, Stokes Croft, Pennywell Lane, 'Canal & Feeder', New Gaol.
