Te Leyden, By Pieter Vandera Aa...., 1707. FIRST EDITION. Slender 8vo, pp. 37 [38 - 42 Index], folding engraved map, 2 folding engraved plates, engraved vignette on title-page, recently rebound in half calf, spine blocked in gilt, marbled boards. A very good copy. The English civil servant William Method (1590 - 1653) was born in Norfolk; he acquired fluency in several foreign languages, including Latin, Dutch, French, and Persian. He began service for the East India Company in 1616, and this account of his experiences there was one of several reports he made to his employers. ODNB notes, "Apart from forthright letters and reports to the company, partly published, he composed a 'Relation of Golconda', a brilliant description of that part of India, which appeared in the 1626 edition of Samuel Purchas's Purchas his Pilgrimage. It included brief descriptions of the kingdoms of Arakan, Pegu, and Tenasserim, based on trade information, not personal observation." This would… Read More

The author and sometime curate Robert Walsh (1772 - 1852) published a History of the City of Dublin in 1815 and went on to write several other books, including Notices of Brazil (1830). This is one of three books in which Contstantinople figures, and this one, like the others, was favourably reviewed. The Eclectic Review pronounced it "unpretending and delightful," with" distinct and extensive information," and concludes that "the most interesting people whom the author met with in his journey, are… Read More

Sandbach: Printed by R. Lindop, MDCCCXXXVII 1838. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 160 x 92 mms., pp. [7] 8 - 105 [106 blank], including half-title, contemporary boards, with paper label on front cover; respined, boards worn, piece torn from upper corner rear free end-paper. Who was Richard Smetham? The most likely candidate is a Methodist minister, described in the online Dictionary of Methodism in Britain and Ireland as a "young preacher [in the]south-west corner of Dorset [preaching in] the last part of the county to be reached by Methodist preaching from what had begun as the extensive Salisbury Circuit. The first known preaching in Bridport was in 1807 in the open air, by Richard Smetham, a young minister from South Petherton." This suggests that he was born in the late 18th century; he is the uncle of the better-known Methodist minister James Smetham (1821 - 1851). Or he might be James Smetham (1821 - 1889) the English Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painter and engraver; he… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed for the Author, and sold by Gideon Crawford in the Parliament-Close, and other Booksellers. MDCCXLVIII. 1748. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo (in 4s), pp. [vi], 36, 19th century half calf, marbled boards, red leather label; corners a bit worn but a very good copy. In his survey of matters infernal, the historian of ideas Damian Frank Pearson notes in his study that George Craighead and another thinker, Tobias Swinden, contended that hell must be in the Sun: "Tobias Swinden (1726) and George Craighead (1748) both argued that Hell could not be in the earth as there would be no room for all the dead and not enough air and fuel to keep the fires burning for eternity, and Hell had been created to confine the fallen angels after the revolt in heaven. The location of Hell could not be in the earth. Their place for Hell was within the confines of the Sun, with the sun-spots being the gateways to the eternal fires. Craighead also challenged what he saw as the heretical and atheist… Read More

London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans..., 1843. 2 volumes. The Swedish writer and feminist reformer Frederika Bremer (1801 - 1865) enjoyed great popularity in the UK and the USA, thanks to this English translation of Granname, first published in 1837 as The Neighbours. "By the time Bremer revealed her name to the public, her works were an acknowledged part of the cultural life in Sweden.[8] Translations made her still more popular abroad, where she was regarded as the "Swedish Miss [Jane]Austen".[26] Upon her arrival in New York, the New York Herald claimed she "probably... has more readers than any other female writer on the globe" and proclaimed her the author "of a new style of literature".[27][28] A literary celebrity, Bremer was never without… Read More

Aberdeen: Prepared and Published by Lewis Smith & Peter Gray..., [1836]. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 146 x 88 mms., pp. [ii], 144, 24, original printed green boards (rubbed and slightly soiled), red roan (rubbed and a little worn), but a good copy with the contemporary autograph "Wm Burnet Craigie/ Linton/ 1838" on the recto of the front free end-paper. The twenty-four pages at the end contain the publishers' announcement and adverts. This would appear to be their first venture at an Aberdeen almanac; "The Publishers of the New Aberdeen Almanac are not unaware of the fact that there is yet ample room in it for still farther improvement. But they beg their fellow-citizens to receive with indulgence this, the first attempt at improvement, where they conceived improvement was loudly called for." London: Printed by Clementi & Co..., [no date] [?1805]. 4to, 235 x 160 mms., pp. 130, engraved throughout with music and text, with index pages at page 1, 41, and [109], contemporary calf, gilt spine (slightly rubbed); joints very slightly cracked, top and base of spine chipped, but a good to very good copy with the bookplate of Harry Colin Miller on the front paste-down end-paper and the autograph "E A Lowe" on the top margin of the title-page. The latter is possibly Elias Avery Lowe (1879 - 1969), the distinguished paleographer. The English firm of music publishers and instrument makers probably started up in the 1790s, went bankrupt in 1789, and re-emerged in conjunction with other publishers and printers. The Magdalen Hospital was founded in 1758, and this is one of many publications of hymns and sacred music associated with it. The first hymn is "Awake my Soul" by Philip Doddrige (1702 - 1751), sometimes sung to music from Handel's opera Ciroë. A… Read More
