1882. Nō Kyōgen Gashū 能狂言画集 Kawabata Gyokushō 川端玉章, artist Fukuendō 福延堂, publisher. Meiji 15 [1882]. An orihon folding album 17.6 x 12.1 cm, bound in cloth. There are 19 double page color woodblock printed images of scenes from Nō and Kyōgen drama. Each scene is identified. Early Meiji era printing in saturated colors, an early work by Gyokushō. The title slip is missing. Overall very good condition.　.

[EHON] Hirokawa Kai 廣川獬. NAGASAKI BUNKEN ROKU 長崎文献錄. Kyōto, Hishiya Magobei, Bunsei Gannen [1817]. 5 vols. in 3, string bound Japanese-style fukuro toji, 25.7 x 17.7 cm, original paper title labels, grey covers. The second printing after the first appearance in 1800. This "RECORD OF THINGS HEARD AND SEEN IN NAGASAKI" details a trip to Nagasaki undertaken by Kai, a scholar of Dutch medicine. This book has been described by Boxer as "one of the principal sources of information about Deshima and its occupants at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century". Not only about the Dutch, but also the Chinese, strange tales and monsters from abroad, etc.,etc. See Hillier pp. 511,2 & Boxer JAN COMPAGNIE IN JAPAN, p.132. In overall good condition, the b+w woodcuts are in good impression. Complete.

1866. KAWAMURA UKOKU. NAGASAKI KIKO SHASEICHO 42 double page [image size 25.3 x 29.2 cm] paintings in sumi with slight color, painted by Ukoku in 1866. There are also 8 double page paintings in a different hand and one double page of calligraphy dated to Taisho 11 [1922]. Ukoku [1838-1906] was born a member of the samurai class and became an important member of the Meiji government. He was known as a teacher of nanga-style art later in life, but this scroll depicts scenes from a journey he took on behalf of the Bakufu in the closing days of the old Tokugawa regime in the late 1860's. His "sketchbook" of the journey is dated the third month of 1866. We know from his biography that he was sent on a mission to Nagasaki at that time. Besides having many students, fulfilling the Nanga amateur painter ideal, he also eventually served as a justice in the Japanese Supreme Court. Reminiscent of the early work of Sugiura Hisui but with its own unique quirky sense of boldness and fun. Animal and vegetal themes for the most part. Very unusual. Complete as issued.

1856. ROBERTSON, W. S., and David Winslett. NAKCOKV ES KERETV ENHVTECESKV. Muskokee [sic], or Creek First Reader. New York: Mission House, 1856. First edition. The text is comprised of Muscogee (Creek) - English word lists and short readings in the Muscogee language, frequently illustrated with small, charming cuts of animals and objects and biblical scenes. 12mo. 48 pp. Contemporary binding of leather backed brown cloth boards, with gilt-stamped title to upper board. Early ink inscription on front pastedown. The backstrip is rubbed, has loss at either end, and is split along one joint - although the board is still firmly attached. The boards are crisp and clean except for a small spot of soiling on the lower board. The gilt title is quite bright. Scant light foxing on initial and closing leaves; otherwise the text is clean. Very good. (Sabin 72019). Rare.

Later printing. 12mo., olive wrappers printed in white, 376 pp.. Dogeared, sunned, with wear to the perimeters, foxing to a few pages, and ink ownership to the ffep.

19. [HOKKAIDO^]. NANBURYO^ GUNSON RYAKKI. Manuscript. 2+ page introduction, 3 full pages of a delicately colored continuous map extending from Akita in northeast Honshu^ up to Matsumae in southern Hokkaido^. With another 28 pages of text detailing family names, places, feudal allotments (koku, villages, etc.) dates of founding (mostly in the Genroku period). All done in a clear hand. Bound fukuro-toji, Japanese-style with a hand-brushed title label. Probably done in the mid 19th century (Bakumatsu era?). Very good condition, in a custom made clasped chitsu case with a hand-brushed title label.

1960. [KATAZOME] OKAMURA Kichiemon 岡村吉右衛門. NARADA NO TAFU 奈良乃太布. Shôwa 35 [1960]. String-bound Japanese-style, privately printed in 50 copies. 31.1 x 19.7 cm., Okamura (1916-2002) was a student of Serizawa Keisuke and embraced his interest in traditional Japanese folk arts, papermaking and stencil printing (katazome). This lovely monograph on Japanese bark-cloth from the town of Narada in Yamanashi Prefecture has two samples and is illustrated throughout with colorful and lively katazome. Signed by the author and artist, Okamura. Fine condition, in the original folding case with printed title label.

Interior slightly darkened but clean throughout with a few tears to a couple of the folding maps. Minimal foxing and dampstaining to endpapers of volume three. A very presentable copy of this monumental work.
