Mediterranean, 1814. Napoleonic War manuscript ship's log for a British warship in the Mediterranean that would be used shortly afterwards to transport convicts to New South Wales (1819) and Van Diemen's Land (1821) in Australia. The folio-sized ship's log comprises two disbound sections of a notebook of a junior British naval officer's training logbook from 1814. Manuscript title to front cover: 'Log &c of the Proceedings of HMSS The Malabar. Kept by W B Boddy.' A beautifully worked half page watercolour sketch of The Malabar under full sail appears on the following leaf as frontispiece. Hand-stitched, laid foolscap paper (water mark John Hayes 1809, vertical chain lines), externally heavily marked, including signs of burning to spine and bottom left of front cover; internally fairly clean, though yellowed, and most pages ink-stained. Very Good. pp 156 A substantial transcript of part of the folk song collector Frantisek Bartos's study of Moravian music, Narodni pisne moravske nove nasbirane. Bound in later brown cloth with wax marking on the upper board, and written on foolscap sized paper in blue black ink, this fair copy of 'O Lidovych Pisni Moravskych' runs to 156 pages and includes numerous musical passages and a pen and ink version of the printed engraving of the bag pipes. No name is given for the copyist but it appears to date from the early twentieth century. Bartos was a friend of Janacek and Bela Bartok and was particularly influential on the folk song collecting pursued by the latter. Very Good 1889

This item comes from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt collection of Frederick Baldwin Adams Jr, 1910 - 2001, the son of Ellen Walters Delano who was a first cousin to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Adams became a passionate bibliophile who served as director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York City for two decades and compiled a significant personal collection relating to F.D.R.. In 1969 he married his third wife who was a Swedish princess and with whom he shared the final years of his life in France. In very good condition in printed card wrappers, lightly soiled with rust marks from the staples, internally crisp. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. Very Good. pp 92 Dickson's naval broadcasts with a letter from the author laid in, presenting the book to his wartime colleague, Sir Clifford Jarrett, who was Principal Private Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty during the Second World War. The letter is on 'Office of the Chief of Naval Information' headed paper and typed in June 1946, offering 'a copy of this book', and addressed in Dickson's hand to 'Dear Jarrett', signed 'Yours ever R.K. Dickson'. The book is very good with a little fading to the boards; the jacket is nicked with some loss at the top of the spine - about good condition. Very Good 1946

Remarkable archival collection of 99 drawings made on location by the Australian artist George Crossley during the filming of Tony Richardson's Ned Kelly feature film which starred Mick Jagger. The drawings vary in size from the largest at 37x50 cm (14.5x19.75 inches) to the smallest at 24x31 cm (9.5x12 inches). Most are executed in black pen on paper, sometimes with pencil sketching and occasional watercolour washes as on the half length portrait of 'Mick Jagger as "Ned Kelly" addressing the Jury Braidwood Courthouse 27th Aug '69...
