Description:
London: National Savings Committee, circa 1940. Poster. This is an original wartime British propaganda poster featuring a message from the Prime Minister exhorting both wartime thrift and the purchase of war bonds. This 20 x 15 inch poster (50.8 x 38.1 cm) features a striking orange background, on the upper portion of which is a head-and-bowtie photographic image of Winston Churchill beside the words, “MESSAGE from the PRIME MINISTER”. Below, on a simulation of Churchill’s 10 Downing Street Stationery bearing his signature, reads the message, “Our huge war expenditure can only in part be met from taxation; money from loans must therefore help to fill the gap. There is thus a double duty for every citizen, whether in private or in business life, of careful economy in expenditure and of lending the resulting savings to the State. One way of discharging this double duty is through the purchase of National War Bonds and I cordially wish the campaign every success.” At the bottom right of the poster… Read More

London: Punch, 1911. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "MILDEWED CHESTNUTS.” appeared thus on p.13 of the 5 July 1911 issue of Punch. The artist is Edward Tennyson Reed. The cartoon is captioned "Winston. 'My dear Lyttleton, you surely don't imagine that you hurt me by pelting me with those absurd little trifles! Your ammunition is out-of-date, and you can't shoot!!" Alfred Lyttleton was a Liberal Unionist politician who, in this cartoon, was attacking Churchill with old issues - Tonypandy, Dartmoor Shepherd, Sidney Street - which provided no traction in the House. Churchill was serving as Colonial Secretary in 1921 when he presided over the post-WWI Cairo Conference, which did much to shape the modern Middle East. Description:
London: Putnam, 1931. First edition. Hardcover. This jacketed British first edition is a noteworthy association and presentation copy, bearing the compliments slip of the man whom the author, translator, and publishers acknowledge immediately following the title page, General Sir Reginald Wingate. Wingate’s 5 x 2.5 inch compliments slip is laid in at the title page and printed in two lines: “WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF | GENERAL SIR REGINALD WINGATE.” Wingate (1861-1953, first baronet), was a British army officer and colonial governor who spent almost his entire professional career in Egypt and Sudan. It was the Mahdist insurrection led by Mohammed Ahmed that fundamentally shaped Wingate’s career. A messianic Islamic leader in central and northern Sudan in the final decades of the 19th century, Mohammed Ahmed found fertile political ground in the inhabitants’ resentment engendered by the corruption of and oppression by Egyptian rulers who had long dominated the region. Mahdists occupied most of… Read More

Description:
France: Printed at Base Printing Plant, 29th Engineers, U.S. Army, 1918. Map. This extraordinary map of the First World War’s first U.S.-led offensive was signed in the field by the man who commanded the victory – General John J. Pershing. “Printed at Base Printing Plant, 29th Engineers, U.S. Army 1918”, this map is titled “MAP TO ILLUSTRATE THE OFFENSIVE OF THE ST. MIHIEL SALIENT To Accompany Report of The Commander In Chief, November 20, 1918”. Just above the title and legend the map is signed in two lines in black ink “John J. Pershing | G. Hq. A.E.F. France”. Examples of this map reside in the Library of Congress and the National Museum of the World War, but this is the only copy we find signed thus. Pershing’s signature on the war-map of a battlefront when and where he affected the fate and borders of nations viscerally tethers this artifact to the history it documents. The map measures 24.5 x 19.625 inches (62.2 x 49.8 cm). It is printed at 1:100,000 scale in blue, red, and gray… Read More

Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., 1934. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the second volume of Churchill's Marlborough: His Life and Times. During the four years covered by Volume II (1702-1705), Marlborough led England as Captain-General. The volume is a substantial 651 pages with 31 illustrations, 76 maps and plans, and 3 document facsimiles. The British first trade edition is a physically impressive production. Each volume measures 9.25 x 6.25 inches (23.5 x 15.9 cm) and is roughly 2 inches thick (5 cm). Each is bound in plum cloth with beveled edges, the Marlborough coat of arms in gilt on the front cover, and a gilt top edge. Moreover, each volume is profusely illustrated. Unfortunately, the plum cloth bindings of Volumes I-III proved highly susceptible to sunning. This copy is very good minus in a good dust jacket which is the correct - and increasingly elusive - first printing, confirmed by an unclipped front flap that… Read More

Description:
London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., 1933. Signed and limited issue of the first edition. Full leather. This signed, limited, and finely bound publisher's presentation set of Churchill's Marlborough would be remarkable for condition alone, but this is also one of just five unnumbered sets reserved by the publisher. This is the only one of the five known to be hand-marked as "Presentation". Churchill signed just below the limitation statement "Winston S. Churchill". But this copy is also inscribed by the publisher. Just above Churchill’s signature in the space where the limitation number would normally be written, the word “Presentation” is inked. On the half title, in four lines in the publisher’s hand, is inked the inscription “To Steve | from | George | 1933.” Condition is excellent, approaching near fine. The spines are only lightly sunned, that of Volume I showing a few freckles. Light spotting appears primarily confined to the untrimmed fore edges, only occasionally and lightly… Read More

London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., 1938. First and only Canadian issue. Hardcover. This is the elusive Canadian issue of the fourth and final volume of Churchill's Marlborough. This final volume covers the years 1708 to 1722, chronicling the decline of Marlborough and the apparent frustration of his work. It is a substantial 671 pages with 24 illustrations, 39 maps and plans, and 1 document facsimile. The elusive Canadian editions of the first three volumes were published by Ryerson Press, so noted on the title pages and the spines of both the bindings and dust jackets. Not so the fourth volume, which is unique and little known even to collectors. By 1938, arrangements between the British publisher Harrap and Ryerson had ended. So Harrap issued the fourth volume as British edition sheets in a British edition dust jacket, but bound to match the previous Ryerson volumes in a distinctly different dark purple smooth cloth without the beveled edges of the British edition. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a U.S. first edition set of the first two volumes of Winston Churchill’s Marlborough in the first state dust jackets. The British first edition of Churchill’s biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, was issued in four volumes. The U.S. publisher chose to split the first two volumes into two books each, resulting in a six-volume set that is otherwise identical in content to the British. These first four U.S. volumes were originally issued in two-volume sets, with cream-colored dust jackets featuring green print. Only in 1938, when the sixth and final U.S. volume was published, were the more commonly seen blue and gold dust jackets issued. Today the first state dust jackets are scarcer than their blue and gold counterparts. Here are fine copies of the first two volumes in nearly very good, first state dust jackets. Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1933. First edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of six U.S. first edition, first printings of Winston Churchill’s monumental biography of his great ancestor, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough. This set features the quite scarce first state dust jackets and slipcases, and is the best we have encountered thus. The U.S. publisher chose to split the first two volumes into two books each; the six-volume U.S. first edition is identical in content its four-volume British counterpart, but dramatically different in appearance. Moreover, there were two distinctly different states of the U.S. first edition.
