Some repairs to the rear wrapper; the text has a waterstain on the lower half but the technical folding plates are fine. In all a good copy.

Bedot et C. Pictet dans l'archipel malais. in the footsteps of Rumphius. A rare offprint from the Revue Suisse de Zoologie, volume 15. Stamped on the front wrapper: "Hommage de l'auteur". No other markings. Inserted are a few leaves with annotations by a later student of Indo-Pacific corals. Uncut. A few old repairs to the spine ends, otherwise an excellent, clean copy.

Deals with the geography and geology of Switzerland and contains, for instance, a large, folding map of Grindewald, and four large, folding tables of minerals; and geological and botanical illustrations. Uniform pebbled half morocco over marbled boards. Spines with five raised band, and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Top edges gilt. = The complete Magazine of Zoology and Botany edited by William Jardine, P. J. Selby and Dr. Johnston. It forms the rare start of a magazine that went through several mergers and name changes. Well-illustrated and containing many new species. Boards worn, with the front board of the second volume detached; the large, double folded full colour plate 13 in the second volume split at folds. Bookplate of the John Crerar Library on both front pastedowns; their perforated stamp on title leaves, and small, weak stamp on plate versos (not shining through). In all a reasonably good set.

Original printed boards. = Includes an astronomical part, as well as an appendix with meteorological observations at Pará, November 1882 to November 1883, by E. Engelenburg. The first author's named is spelled both as Rijckevorsel and Ryckevorsel. Published in the Verhandelingen of the Koninklijke Akademie van Wetenschappen. Front board and first two leaves detached, but easily repaired. Some light toning, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

Publisher's semi-uniform blue and green cloth with gilt title on the front boards and spines. = A magnificent work on Mesozoic and Tertiary flowering plants including many trees, based mainly very well-preserved leaves and seeds, with numerous new species. It was published over a long period, past the end of the Soviet period, hence the different titles. Volume 1 deals with Magnoliaceae - Eucommiaceae. Volume 2 was published in 1982 with the same general title, and deals with Ulmaceae - Betulaceae; volume 3 has the new post-Sovjet title, Magnoliophyta fossilia Rossiae et Civitatum Finitimarum, with L. Original full-colour pictorial laminated boards. = An important and surprisingly rare work on Indian oil-producing plants, e.g. cumin, davana, dill seed, fennel, ginger, linaloe, palmarosa, patchouli, rose, etc., etc., and some others with aromatic qualities, in particular hops. The full colour photos show flowering plants, or seeds; the accompanying text deals with the distillation, production, use and chemistry of the various oils, as well as description of plants seeds, etc., completed with a list of references. Joints partly split at spine foot, otherwise a very good, clean copy.

The second work also including a few marine species (Truncatella, Assiminea, Rissoa). Robert Boog Watson's copies, bound together, with his autograph on the front free endpaper, and Paiva's hand-written dedication to Watson on the second blank recto. Little is known about the author, Luigi Menegazzi (1793-1854). He is not (yet) in 2,400 Years of Malacology. This publication was published posthumous. Provenance: a small stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) on the half-title. The first seven volumes were published in two parts, the others in one part (always combined, numbered 1-2). A few annotations, a few stamps on prliminary pages, but otherwise a nice, clean set.

Marbled endpapers. Speckled edges. = A typical Bourguignat title. It deals with the terrestrial molluscs of a region in the French Alps, between Geneva and Grenoble. Dance calls the French malacologist Jules-René Bourguignat (1829-1892) the "Bête noir" of French conchology, and says that the "practice of species-mongering represents an unsavoury aspect of systematic conchology in the 19th century". Bound in the rear is a 14 pp. list of works by Bourguignat, "En vente aux librairies J. B. Baillière et fils, Savy et Challamel. 1864". The number 46, on the spine refer to the numbered list of papers in Oeuvres Scientifiques de M. J.-R. Bourguignat, published by Servain.
