[Mexican American War] Autograph Letter Signed. To Lt. Harry Daily, 3rd Indiana Infantry, Buena Vista, Mexico from James S. Athon, 3rd Indiana Infantry surgeon. May 9, 1847. 1 pp. folded into stampless cover. Wax seal residue and small tear where opened, not affecting text.
Athon writing to his friend Harrison Daily, who is in Buena Vista. First part of the letter requests a duplicate copy of a document apparently for him to get reimbursed $8, showing that the Army paperwork was important 125 years ago. The last portion of the letter relates war news: "We have news here from a reliable source that Genl. Scott met Santa Ana (sic) and defeated him, and that it was by surprise which enabled our forces to obtain a large number of ordnance & although this calamity has dispersed the enemies to the four winds, yet I am told by a gentleman connected to our Army, and who has spent 15 years in this country that he considers the war just commenced."

The map shows southern Canada, all of the United States, Mexico, and the northern portions of Guatemala and Honduras. Small splits at the folds, else very good.
OCLC shows 33 holdings, one in Texas (UT-Arlington). Part 3 of the 12th annual report of the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey, published in 1883. Table of contents for first 7 sheets inside cover. Includes a very early map of Yellowstone, which was created by the Park Protection Act in 1872.
