[Mexican American War] Autograph Letter Signed. To Lt. Harry Daily, 3rd Indiana Infantry, Buena Vista, Mexico from James S. Athon, 3rd Indiana Infantry surgeon. May 9, 1847. 1 pp. folded into stampless cover. Wax seal residue and small tear where opened, not affecting text.
Athon writing to his friend Harrison Daily, who is in Buena Vista. First part of the letter requests a duplicate copy of a document apparently for him to get reimbursed $8, showing that the Army paperwork was important 125 years ago. The last portion of the letter relates war news: "We have news here from a reliable source that Genl. Scott met Santa Ana (sic) and defeated him, and that it was by surprise which enabled our forces to obtain a large number of ordnance & although this calamity has dispersed the enemies to the four winds, yet I am told by a gentleman connected to our Army, and who has spent 15 years in this country that he considers the war just commenced."

He became a farmer and gold prospector and moved to Texas in 1836. While prospecting in Texas, Lindsey met Robert Trimble, and the two of them eventually became the surveyors of Galveston Island. The Texas Secretary of the Treasury, under the authority of the Congress of the Republic of Texas, had the responsibility of selling individual lots of land. Depicted are ocean shipping routes, mail and stage routes west, and four proposed railway routes west. Restoration of a small piece of the margin mostly not affecting the image.

Early eclipse maps "had to be drawn by hand, and the manual calculations leading up to them were daunting; one had to take into account Earth's motion around the sun, the Moon's motion around the Earth, and the Earth's own motion about its axis.
