Der Vogelhändler, to a libretto by Moritz West and Ludwig Held, after Varin and Biéville's Ce que deviennent les roses, was first performed in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien on January 10, 1891. János Palotási (1821-1878) was a violinist and composer who helped to promote Hungarian music and culture. His compositions were popular in their own right, and also as inspiration for others, such as Brahms and Mosonyi. Mosonyi was born Michael Brand on the border between Austria and Hungary. In 1842 he moved to Pest, where he would live and work the rest of his life, dedicating himself to a national Hungarian style. To recognize his change of style and honor his heritage, he adopted his Hungarian name in 1859.
