Performed nearly 200 times in Paris, it was a welcome success for Offenbach. János Palotási (1821-1878) was a violinist and composer who helped to promote Hungarian music and culture. His compositions were popular in their own right, and also as inspiration for others, such as Brahms and Mosonyi. Mosonyi was born Michael Brand on the border between Austria and Hungary. In 1842 he moved to Pest, where he would live and work the rest of his life, dedicating himself to a national Hungarian style. To recognize his change of style and honor his heritage, he adopted his Hungarian name in 1859.
