A book for older children, Dr Branley looks to answer some of the essential questions around the mysteries of Stonehenge. Where did the stone pillars come from? How were they transported and erected? When was it built and who built it? And – crucially – why? The book draws together the latest thinking of its time, by bringing together the thinking of anthropologists, archaeologists, engineers and astronomers. The excellent illustrations are by double Greenaway award winner Victor Ambrus, later also well known for his work on Time Team. A wonderful book, especially in this condition.

Pauline Chapman, archivist to Madame Tussaud's, here recounts the stories of more than fifty murders whose perpetrators have been among many felons modelled in wax for the collection. She relates the fascinating history of the chamber of horrors, which began and continues with crowds eager to gaze at the wax representations of notorious criminals. A really interesting read.

Symonds, a prolific writer in various fields, wrote four biographies of Crowley including this one in 1958. A really nice copy. Crowley's masterpiece, the work into which he poured his knowledge of the Astral and other planes. It is in three parts, the first two of which cover the principles of Yoga, and of Ceremonial Magic as taught in the Golden Dawn where he served his apprenticeship from 1898 to 1900. The third and major part, which was written mainly in his Abbey of Thelma in Sicily between 1920 and 1923, contains his own system of practical occultism. Crowley's Magick is a doctrine and a technique for establishing contact with extra-terrestrial entities - spirits, demons, elementals - for the purpose of extending human consciousness and expanding life to cosmic proportions. Crowley's most famous work. This is the Castle Books 1991 reprint. Exceptionally good condition for this edition. No spine fade at all, which is often seen. Archaeologist Prag and medical artist Neave have authored a work on the compelling story of pioneering work in reconstructing the facial appearance of ancient people. They give first hand accounts of the exciting search for evidence to recreate a likeness and explain the historical circumstances surrounding each body. Some of the deaths featured were acts of violence while others were peaceful. The book takes the reader into byways of forensic study, surgery and folklore, and reveals how the art of facial reconstruction has opened upwhole new vistas of the past.

Holocaust survivor Eisler had previously studied and lectured on in history. A polymath, who wrote on mythology, comparative religion politics, astrology and many other topics. In Man Into Wolf he argues for a prehistoric variation of human violence. This is a first rate copy of the 1978 Ross-Erikson paperback edition, with a foreword by Donald Lathrop. Main text is a reprint of the original 1948 edition. Pages are almost pristine, with no markings or browning. A very nice copy of the scarce first edition of Besant and Leadbeater's classic history of mankind divined via clairvoyance. Besant was President of the Theosophical Society, Leadbetter a member and both prolific writers in their own right. This is the original first edition from Madras in 1913. Pages are clean and unmarked by notations. There is a neat inscription on FEP from the year of publication itself, and -rarely- a sticker from the Theosophical Society's own library on the pastedown. Illustrations (including the colour double spread) are all very good. Fore and top edges have some usual age wear, and there is a little sporadic foxing on a few pages. The vast majority though are in first rate condition. Binding is tight. Exceptionally rare copy of Professor Simpson's famous book, as almost never seen in its dust jacket. This is the second edition (1923, a year after the first). Pages are wonderful: no inscriptions, no apparent foxing, damp or creasing at all. Illustrations all present and nice. Binding tight. Page edges are uncut. Red boards are excellent, and gilt writing thereon is really bright. DJ is vanishingly rare, we have never seen one for sale before. Unclipped, it has a darkened spine, shelf wear, and a couple of missing segments, some rubbing and small tears. BUT it has done its protective job and is in a pretty good state for a simple paper cover - that it survived all this time is remarkable! Well known writer on all things mystical, Evelyn Underhill here turns her attention to man's experience of the supernatural. This is the 1927 first edition. A nice copy. Pages are unmarked save for a neat inscription on the pastedown. Otherwise some tanning on the FEP, and some scattered foxing. Likewise on top and fore edges. One part of Besant's remarkable life was as an author on the themes of Theosophy and Spiritualism. In this work she looks at how life continues after the death of the physical body. This is a nice copy of the first edition, published in India where she of course lived for many years. Pages are good, bright and clean. Tanning on endpapers and a little foxing here and there, mostly at the start of the book. First page of chapter one has a couple of small marks on the page (see photos) but otherwise no marking or inscriptions. Binding is tight, with a little feeling of loosened but no apparent actual issues. Boards are good, just the normal age wear and a little shelf wear by exception. 1940s Sci-Fi from Erroll Collins, a pseudonym for British writer Ellen Redknap. A rare copy especially in this condition. On the morning of January 30th 1889, Crown prince Rudolph of Austria, only son of Emperor Francis Joseph I, was found dead in his bedroom in a hunting lodge in Mayerling. Beside him, the body of Baroness Mary Vetsera. Thus begins one of the great mysteries of the late 19th century. Was it a double suicide, a murder and suicide, or even a double murder? Judtmann has produced arguably the most detailed and comprehensive book on the infamous case, studying all the theories and data and revealing incredible new material. In the 2000s, long after Judtmann's book first appeared, more information came to light favouring the suicide theories.

British spiritual healer Harry Edwards here examines prolific Welsh medium Jack Webber. Webber was never properly investigated by very objective critics, and Edwards is fully supportive of the medium's supposed gifts. The book is complete with a range of photographs of Webber apparently in mid trance. A nice copy of the first edition, with DJ. Book pages are excellent: bright and clear, with no obvious foxing, tanning or creasing. There is a neat previous owner inscription on front FEP (see photo) but otherwise excellent. A first rate copy. Physicist John Hasted's controversial book covers the experiments he did on 'psychics' in a bid to –successfully in his view- prove the true merit of their claims. Hasted suggests that paranormal effects arise through telepathy from the individual in a parallel universe. Although the book has a scientific look, and a claim that the experiments were of laboratory quality, many sceptics disagreed, and condemned the tests as of poor quality and providing dubious results.
