Description:
Boston, Massachusetts: Massachusetts Gay Political Caucus, 1981. 14" x 8½". Two sheets, each printed both sides, stapled in upper left corner. Very good: old folds and light creasing. The Gay Pride Week edition of the newsletter for the Massachusetts Gay Political Caucus ("MGPC"). Founded in 1974 as the Boston Advocates for Human Rights, it changed its name in 1976 to Massachusetts Caucus for Gay Legislation and again to the MGPC in 1987. It employed a full time lobbyist and fought for legislation on the state level with one major achievement being 1989's Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Bill which was signed by Governor Michael Dukakis. This issue has a report on a failed attempt at passing a bill that would have made it unlawful to discriminate based on sexual preference and included the position of Representative Royall H. Switzler of Wellesley who "took the floor to speak with great emotion to say that persons leading our lifestyles should, 'build bigger closets'. He said that if the bill passed,… Read More

Description:
[Nanking, China]: Engineer Section, Army Advisory Group, 1947. Good. 9½" x 6¾". Illustrated thin card wrappers. Pp. [5], 88, [1]. Good: lacking the map; wrappers heavily soiled and worn with some loss to edges and spine; internally very good with light toning at extremities. This is a heavily illustrated guidebook to China produced for the wives and families of American soldiers. The first section provided a "Greeting" and backdrop of information: "This small booklet is intended to give you an insight into China from the point of view of an American Army or Navy family. Your husband may be stationed in Shanghai, Nanking, Hankow, Hangchow, Tsingtao or Peiping. We have tried to tell you a little about each of these places: where you will live, what kind of a home you may expect to find awaiting you, and what there is to do and see." At the time of publication, the United States Army Advisory Group was stationed in Nanking, the Nationalist capital. Americans stayed on in China post-World War II… Read More

Description:
[New Orleans, Louisiana]: N.P., 1954. Very good. 7¼" x 3¾". Plastic spiral-bound at top edge, thin card covers. Pp. 68 + two blank pages for notes at rear. Very good: covers lightly spotted with a few small stains to rear; a few pages lightly soiled at top edge; a bit of light scattered spotting. This is a rare and fantastic book of recipes written by an early African American female celebrity chef and television host, Mandy Lee. Amanda "Mandy" Lee was the on-air pseudonym for Ruth Porter Prevost. She was born in Slidell, Louisiana in 1917, and a 1950 New Orleans census listed her occupation as "lunch room supervisor" for a parish school. Later that year, Lee took over as host of a cooking show on New Orleans' WDSU-TV when Lena Richards died. Richards had been the first African American woman to host her own television cooking show, making Mandy the second. Contemporary news accounts called Mandy "a jovial person with a delightful smile and a rich laughing voice" and spoke of the "warm regard… Read More

Description:
Texas: Russel M. White, 1947. Very good. 8 7/8" x 3 7/8", folded; opens to 17¾" x 23½"; printed both sides. Very good: light edge wear with a few tiny chips, a few minuscule separations at folds, light dust soiling, and small holes at each intersection. This map/guide to the lower Rio Grande valley is a sensory overload of business, city, street and highway names splashed across 15 separate inset maps in bold explosions of vivid blue and orange. The largest map, which stretches across the entire sheet, shows the region generally along state highways 77, 83 and 281. Each town name is printed in blue inside an orange box. That map is surrounded by inset maps where each town has its name printed in thick orange letters outlined in blue, with the other inset maps on the leaf's other side. The cities and towns represented are: McAllen, Raymondville, Harlingen, Rio Grande City, San Benito, Mission, San Juan, Donna, Weslaco, Mercedes, Edinburg, Pharr, Brownsville, Reynosa, and Matamoros. Description:
Chicago: Poole Bros. Map Engravers, 1897. Very good. 8¾" x 4" folded; opens to 17½" x 34¾"; Map of the United States: 16½" x 30½"; County Map of Texas: 11¼" x 11¼". Very good: moderate staining and a few small nibble holes to outer panels costing a couple of characters in panels, and a tiny portion of the main map; a few small separations at intersections. This is a rare timetable/land promotional issued by the Houston and Texas Central System of Railroads ("HTC") with three maps. Chartered in 1848, the line was a predecessor of the Union Pacific Railroad and construction began in 1856. It ultimately stretched 872 miles from Houston to Dallas and Denison with branches to Austin and Waco. The map of the United States is printed in four colors with Texas showing the HTC rail lines in a thick black. There are two illustrated vignettes at bottom, one showing cattle grazing, the other portraying African Americans picking cotton. To the left of the image of cotton picking is a panel of text that… Read More

Description:
San Francisco, California: Bay Area Committee Against the Briggs Initiative, 1978. Very good. 8½" x 11". Flyer printed both sides. Very good: creased at center, a few spots of soiling, and two lines in black felt marker written on mail-in form. This flyer incites action by calling voters to a march and rally to support the defeat of the Briggs Initiative, the 1978 California ballot measure which sought to ban LGBTQ+ teachers from public schools. Its verso provided much information on the initiative as well as why people should oppose it. The Bay Area Committee Against the Briggs Initiative was co-chaired by Paula Lichtenberg, a law librarian who is also a co-founder of the GLBT historical society. While not noted as such, this was Paul Mariah's copy. None found in OCLC, though we've handled one other. This item is offered by Langdon Manor Books, LLC, antiquarian booksellers. Description:
Marshfield, Oregon: J. W. Riggs, 1898. Marshfield Oregon Parade Photos. Four black and white photographs, each measuring around 7½" x 9½" on larger card mounts. One photo and mount near fine; one very good with small stains around the images not affecting the image, the other two very good minus with stains affecting the image. Large, well composed images of Marshfield, Oregon parades at the end of the 19th century. Three different parades are depicted. One may have been a Woodmen of the World parade as an archway is emblazoned with a banner, "Woodmen" and the back of this photo identifies it as Front Street. Another is identified on the mount as a Fourth of July Parade in 1898. The final two depict the same parade, taken close together in time as the people in the left foreground appear to be the same. Description:
Washington, D.C., 1942. Very good. Group of 16 pieces of ephemera measuring between 3¼" x 5½" and 11½" x 9". Most items very good: one with a tiny tear and moderate creasing at edges, not affecting any text; a few with light edge wear and a few small soil spots; some scattered light spotting. This is a fantastic group of speeches, ephemera and campaign materials related to the first woman to be elected to national office in the United States, Jeannette Rankin. Jeannette Rankin was born in 1880 near Missoula, Montana and graduated from the University of Montana in 1902. After a brief period as a social worker in Spokane, she moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington and became involved in the women's suffrage movement. She helped organize the New York Woman Suffrage Party, served as president of the Montana Women's Suffrage Association and as field secretary of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. In 1911, Rankin became the first woman to speak before the Montana… Read More

Description:
Orangeburg, South Carolina, 1940. Very good. 5 1/8" x 7". Blue faux leather over boards commercial autograph book. Pp. [114], nearly all inscribed. Very good: covers moderately worn at edges and lightly soiled; evidence of minor damp stain to edges of a few leaves, lightly smearing a few lines of ink but largely not affecting legibility; a few scattered ink splotches. This is a lightly illustrated and deeply moving autograph book that belonged to a young African American woman, Leola Johnston. Leola was in the class of 1942 at the South Carolina HBCU, Claflin College, and this book showcases the hopes, wishes and lived experiences of her friends and classmates at the school. Claflin College (now University) is the oldest HBCU in South Carolina and claims to be the first college in the state to welcome all students regardless of race or gender. The school boasts a long list of notable alumni, not least among them the 1884 graduates Alice Jackson Moorer and Annie Thortne, two of the first five… Read More

Description:
[Philadelphia]: N.P., 1940. 20 3/8" x 13". Broadside/small poster. Very good: several small chips and a few tiny tears at edges, lightly toned at extremities. This is a striking poster for the Betsy Ross Air Corps, the first of several paramilitary women's aviation organizations that hoped to support the Army Air Corps and assist during times of national emergency. The Corps was founded in 1931 by Opal Kunz, a charter member of the Ninety-Nines organization of women pilots and the first woman to race men in open competition. The Corps had its own uniforms and was divided into nine regions across the country. We think this poster was part of a membership drive ignited by the war in Europe. We list the place of publication as Philadelphia as it references Marcelle Warner Lower as the commander of the 3rd area and an address of 2601 [Benjamin Franklin] Parkway which was where the 3rd Area headquarters was located. Also, Lower was married near the end of 1940 and immediately began using her married… Read More

Description:
Generally Michigan, 1910. Very good. Includes 210 card-mounted photos and 14 tin types; most are loose; 71 are CDV or smaller, 139 are cabinet cards or larger-approximately three quarters of the subjects are identified with names. Also included are four manuscript books and some ephemera. Generally very good: light to moderate wear; albums and manuscripts with faint odor. This is a collection of photographs, with some manuscripts and ephemera, documenting descendants of Lorenzo Mudge, who, along with his first wife Emeline was the first to settle in Castleton, Michigan. The collection was probably compiled by Lorenzo's daughter, Mina or one of Mina's children. It also includes photographs of Mina's extended family after she married William L. Holmes, a preacher, in 1890. Mina, William and two of their young children are seen in the photo at right and there are at least three portraits of Mina in the collection. Per an included proof sheet with a biography of Lorenzo Mudge from History of Allegan… Read More
