Gutenberg interest, 1425. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Beautiful German Bible manuscript leaf on vellum, circa 1425. This is a classic example of the scribal writing (in Textura/Gothic) which Gutenberg used as the basis for the type that he created for the first printed book in 1455. This is a particularly lovely example, written in a large Gothic hand, double column, one 2-line initial in red and blue with elaborate 15-line tracery in the margin; one 6-line initial in red and blue with tracery. From Judges. This vellum leaf came from the typography collection of RR Donnelley, the great Chicago printing firm. The leaf is beautifully presented in a sturdy black paper mount and the leaf is fully viewable from both sides. This manuscript leaf looks very much like a printed Gutenberg leaf, right down to the black, red and blue inking used in that most famous book. Delightful.

Illustrated title, decorations and 40 colored tipped in plates after colored paintings by Hugh Thomson. The colored illustrations were reproduced by Hentschel Colour-type Process.

The paper pastedown illustration on the top board is complete. 262 pp., 13 tipped-in colored illustrations and 67 black and white lithographed illustrations throughout text. Black cloth binding with color illustration affixed to front and title stamped in gold on the spine. The American edition also includes a title page of a sampler in color that is not in the English editions.

A lovely example of the first trade edition of this classic, boldy inscribed by the author to an anonymous recipient: "With best wishes, sincerely, Wm T. Tilden 2nd. /January 27, 1934. This edition is actually more attractive than the limited leather edition, the spine of which always fades or becomes tatty. This edition is in deep blue full cloth, with gilt titles (and a spining gold tennis ball), with only a touch of edge wear (no rub-throughs or splits), and absolutely no fading. Also included is a 1936 notice of Bill Tilden's farwell exhibition match at Dreamland auditorium in San Francsico. Also laid in are copies of his obituary from 1953, and other clippings. The newspaper clippings have caused a minor band of acid offset on the back inside cover blank page.
