Light cloth boards. 364pp illustrated b/w plates, foldout map. 8vo. Original Dutch text, with Afrikaans introduction. 48pp English summary by P.J. Smuts. The author visited the Cape in 1825, visiting the Caledon baths for 'the cure', Genadendaal Mission, Franschoek & Stellenbosch. He was on his way to Java onboard the "Abel Tasman", but was forced to stay over at the Cape for health reasons. He made very detailed and factual observations, being particularly critical of slavery at the Cape.

This was he catalogue of her exhibition held during the 1988 Standard Bank National Arts Festival held in Grahamstown, South Africa.

Funchal, Madeira. nd. c.1890-1900.. Physically VG+ condition, but image fading right top portion - see image.. 232mm wide x 176mm high. Photographer's stamp to rear. Manuel de Olim Perestrello (1854-1929) was a Portuguese commercial photographer based in Funchal, Madeira, in the late 1800s & early 1900s. This original print is a view looking down onto the harbour and town of Funchal, with vine trellises in the garden to the foreground. 'Madeira' is inscribed in pencil to rear. Little appears recorded on the life of this photographer, but his photographs generally show a keen eye for an interesting viewpoint and have historical significance showing the Madeira of now more than a century ago.

The author visited the area and examined material confiscated in over 1200 cases later making a detailed study of Barotse magical beliefs and practices. Discusses differences in practice and belief of the various tribes and how they were influenced by contact with the Western world. Extensively illustrated.

Originally known as the Transvaal Rebellion or the Transvaal War of Independence, and now referred to as the First Boer War, this was to be one of those small colonial wars occurring in the latter 19thC and quickly dealt with. Entering the war full of confidence within a few weeks the British had suffered a number of unexpected reverses before the humiliating defeat of Sir George Colley's forces on Majuba. Covering the politics, the main characters, the battles, it is illustrated with contemporary photographs & drawings plus illustrative maps of the main battlesa ndfull-page colour illustrations of the battles showing soldiers in various uniforms. This is an excellent introduction to further readings on the First Boer War.
