Description:
Lugdun. Batavor: Ex Officina Elseviriana, 1639. Hardcover. Near Fine. 24 mo. 442, [154] pp. 18th c. olive morocco, spine flat, nicely gilt on all sides. This is the third volume of the 1639 - 1640 Elzevier edition of the works of Seneca the Elder & Younger (Willems notes a 1640 edition, but not this edition). The first two volumes contain Seneca the Younger, while the third volume contains the works of the Elder, his father. So this volume, although an odd volume technically speaking, stands alone as complete for Seneca the Elder. A lovely copy in a charming binding. This printing is one of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir's famed pocket editions of Latin classics, initiated in 1629 during an expansion of the press. The aim was to ensure wide circulation of accurate texts for everyday use, and the books were printed with engraved title-pages, narrow margins, and a distinctive font of type, cut by Christoffel van Dijck, whose influence on subsequent typographers endured well into the 19th century.

Description:
Frankfurt. Hardcover. Very Good+. MDLII (1652). 8vo (160 x 90mm). Pagination: 463pp. Signatures: A-Z(8), Aa-Ff(8). Italic type. Period vellum, spine inscribed 78; (covers somewhat soiled and darkened, corners lightly bumped, intermittent browning, sound copy with period annotations). This copy enhanced with Latin marginalia throughout, including pastedown and front flyleaf covered in three pages of philosophical notations written in Latin, seemingly following a traditional Thomastic philosophy on the theme of sin. These are seemingly unpublished thoughts written in a clear, later 17th- or early 18th-century hand. The rear blanks extra inscribed with an index to the chapters 1 through 38 and further thoughts on the four elements and miscellaneous text. Somewhat faded ownership inscription to title, showing “Georgius” and the year 1779. Daniel Stahl was a professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Jena, one of the oldest universities in Germany to maintain a long… Read More

Oxford: Stephani Fletcher, [1723]. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo (195 x 119mm). [6], 317pp., [23]. Portraits. Contemporary calf; (light occasional stains; calf torn to upper cover and spine somewhat chipped, corners bumped). Cicero’s important classic and esteemed edition of Jacques Proust author of Diderot et L’Encylopedie. Cicero’s De oratore (“On the Orator”) is a moral and political dialogue written by Cicero in 55 BCE. It is set in 91 BCE when Lucius Licinius Crassus died, just before a social war and civil war broke out between Marius and Sulla, and during which Marcus Antonius Orator, the other great orator of this dialogue, died. Cicero wrote De Oratore to describe the idyllic Marcus Antonius and imagine him as a philosophic and moral guide of the state.

Description:
Paris: Rene Julliard, 1954. Paperback. Good. Wraps. From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. (1909-2000) -- an iconic American actor from Hollwood's Golden Era, and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II -- with his bookplate on the verso of the front flyleaf. Inscribed to him by Chevalier on the half-title page. His connection to Chevalier seems to be a long one: Fairbanks, Sr. (1883-1939) offered Chevalier a star billing with Mary Pickford, but Chevalier was hesitant to perform in a silent film. It is ilkely that their paths crossed often, as Chevalier (primarily associated with Paramount studios) and Fairbanks were part of a prolific and powerful Hollywood coterie, that included such giants as Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith. Covers a little chipped at corners and along spine; leaves brittle, and mostly unopened.
