It had its origins in a partnership founded in 1899 by Basil Magor and Robert Wonham, which led in 1902 to a manufacturing operation called the Wonham-Magor Engineering Works. In the first part of the century, Magor concentrated on export railcars, aided by its proximity to the port of New York. Basil's brother, Robert Magor, also became associated with the company, and in 1910 it became the Magor Car Company. It was incorporated in 1917 as the Magor Car Corporation, among its major stockholders was J.P. Morgan. In 1914, Magor's first freight cars for revenue use on an American railroad were built, and such sales grew steadily thereafter, though export cars continued as the company's mainstay for some years. The railroad is but a ghost of its former self operating only 3.3 miles of track on an as-needed basis. The historical photographs are obviously in B&W and most from the modern era are in color. The appendix includes a detailed roster of locomotives (both steam and diesel) plus other rolling stock. The McCloud River country, south and east of towering Mt. Included are color maps, timetable reproductions and a list of industries served. This is not a picture book with captions. If I wanted to model this part of the Milwaukee Road, this book would be very helpful as you have the prototype equipment, the cars used and the human element of operation. Milwaukee Road's Racine & Southwestern Division linked the railroad's hometown of Milwaukee, Wis., with the Mississippi River at Savanna, Ill. Hired on in 1971, Jerry Pyfer shares stories of Midwestern railroading combined with his colorful photography. Climb aboard with Jerry as he covers the entire division in its final decade. Morning Sun Books. Hardcover. New. As kid from Minneapolis, the Milwaukee Road had quite a presence in the Twin Cities (now ""The Cities"") and was one of my favorites. The selection of photographs include the Milwaukee's eclectic fleet of diesel locomotives. Pictures of Pig's Eye Yard, St. Paul Union Depot, the Minneapolis Depot shared with the Soo Line and Rock Island plus pictures from the southern Minnesota branch lines bring back memories. Out west the Milwaukee continues to the Pacific coast across the expansive prairies and through the forests with many pictures of bridges, tunnel portals and depots. A complete list of tunnels on the Milwaukee with altitude and length is included. Beginning in Minnesota and ending in Washington State this title is a nice color tour of the great Milwaukee Road.
