Good condition. Although the second edition, this is still an early cookbook for Oregon. Of particular interest is the "Cakes and Cookies" section. It has a recipe for Ice Cream Cake, an early appearance. Most ice cream cakes of this era (one of the earliest being in The Settlement Cookbook, 1901) call for layering ice cream with cake; this one appears to be a solid mass of milk, butter, eggs, sugar and flour. Founded in Paris in 1872 by Alfred Prunier, the restaurant achieved international fame for its seafood. Madame Prunier was the granddaughter of the founder, and moved it to London before WWII.

Contemporary mottled calf with five raised bands and gilt titles to spine, 7 1/2 x 5 inches, [20],368 pages, 8 engraved plates, no author portrait at frontis and perhaps lacking a front free endpaper; occasional spots wearing through at extremities, three tiny worm holes at top of rear board, one at tail of spine and another slightly larger at head of front joint, some writing scribbled out at top edge of title page, brief inked notation in rear, pages show standard browning and waving as typical of books of this age, a couple of handwritten corrections to text: for example, the word "humeur" has been lined out and "tumeur" has been written next to it in the margin. The use of plastics in bookbinding would be a catalog unto itself; in this case the material resembles vellum at first glance, even the slight bowing of the boards over time. A lovely example of an unusual binding, the Crowell 16mo "Faience Library" edition issued 1896.

The son of the owner of an iron foundry, Green devoted most of his time to writing short stories about working-class life in the industrial North. These were published in most of the leading publications of the period, frequently anthologised, and collected in the 1948 volume Land Without Heroes. Loose leaf within paper folder, 12-1/2" tall, 24 pp. Leaves are in near fine to fine condition, but the spine of the folder is obliterated, and there is chipping to edges of folder. Complete with colophon and limitation leaves. John Beecher, a descendant of Harriet Beecher Stowe, threw his life away on principle (at least, that's the gist of the final poem, "Reflections of a Man Who Once Stood Up for Freedom.") He had a long and varied career, went through three wives and produced this with the help of his fourth wife, Barbara Beecher, who did the illustrations. Their Morning Star Press would later become the Rampart Press.
