Halle, H. Bauer, 1909. 8vo (23.9 x 17.1 cm). xvii, 465, 24 pp.; 224 text illustrations, 21 plates, 20 examples of marbled paper tipped in. Early 20th-century full morocco. Spine with five raised bands; compartments with gilt geometric patterns and morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers with gilt-ornamented red morocco borders. Gilt, red, white and black ornamental edges. = A wonderful "ode to bookbinding". This work is often found in simple bindings, and often shows signs of heavy use. This copy, however, takes theory to practice and comes in an exquisite red morocco binding, showing superior craftmanship. The edges, especially, are quite unusual, as they show various types of bookbinder's tools. Inscribed by a former owner in the top margin of the half-title, S. J. Schuring, i.e., bookbinder Leendert Jacobus Schuring (1889-1947) from The Hague. Spine and part of the rear board a bit sunned, a few plate margins a bit foxed and one with a short, repaired tear; otherwise in… Read More

France, not published, 1783. (19.2 x 12.6 visible). Original pen and ink drawing. In larger, French passepartout (30.2 x 23.5 cm). = Captioned La cataracte de Niagara, Basire f[ecit]; and, in a different old hand, to 3. p. 210. Signed in lower left margin, dated "mars 1783" in lower right margin. To the right the scenery is rather mountainous - far more so than in reality. The British artist James Basire the Elder (1730-1802) is known as a painter, etcher and engraver. Chiefly working as an engraver, he showed himself to be an accomplished original artist too (see Goddard). Although Basire travelled abroad, e.g., to France and Italy, he never visited North America, which may explain the free interpretation of the Niagara Falls surroundings. The reference added may refer to Crevecoeur's Voyage dans le Haute Pensylvanie et dans l'état de New-York (1801), but his illustrations of the Falls, by Bonfois, are in fact quite different. If interested in beautiful bindings and/or goats, this is a must. Written by the French agriculturist Joseph Crépin (1849-1943), not to be confused with his contemporary, the French painter, plumber and jazz musician Joseph Crépin (1875-1948). Bookplate of A. Jouffray "A l'aventure" mounted on front pastedown. Save for a few light spots on the first and last few leaves internally clean and fresh. A very good copy.

Paris, De Bure, 1780. Folio (30.4 x 22.7 cm). Engraved frontispiece; 80 engraved plates. 19th-century dark green half morocco over dark green pebbled boards. Spine with four gilt-lined, raised bands; compartments with embossed borders and gilt title. Marbled endpapers; speckled edges. = This edition, known as the “De Favannes” edition, was published long after the author's death (1765). The engraver and publisher Jacques de Favanne(s) de Montcervelle (1716-1770) and his son, [Jaques] Guillaume (1759?-1795?) greatly expanded this edition from the original 1742 edition. This is the complete atlas, including the first 19 plates now and then found associated with the text volumes. Boards very slightly rubbed at edges; one plate with a few, marginal spots, four plates a bit shorter, three of which with an uneven lower edge, and one plate from before numbers - with the captions and numbers neatly written in an old hand; otherwise a fine, clean copy. The work deals with the mineralogy of sea urchins, in particular that of the spines, with implications on the phylogeny. Former owner's small stamp in one text page top margin, the date 1965 written in pencil on the front board. Otherwise a very good, clean item. Rare, if not unique.
