Lambton Hall , Durham - the seat of Lord Durham Jones & Co, 1829 Originally produced for the "Views of the Seats, Mansions, Castles, etc. of Noblemen and Gentlemen" (London : 1829-1831). Lambton Castle stands above Chester-le-Street, County Durham and is a stately home, the ancestral seat of the Lambton family, the Earls of Durham. Largely constructed as it is between 1820 and 1828 by John Lambton, first Earl of Durham and one-time Governor General of Canada, it was built around Harraton Hall, a 17th-century mansion. The castle was designed by architects Joseph Bonomi the Elder and his son Ignatius and built in the style of a Norman castle, as was the fashion of the time.

New York: Charles Magnus & Co. 12 Frankfort St, 1860. 1st Edition. No binding. Good. Nice Illustrated Magnus letter sheet, showing Halifax, Image size: 7-1/4 x 4-3/4. inches on paper 8-3/4 x 10-1/2 inches.Edges chipped, otherwise good condition. A series of souvenir prints issued by the New York firm of Charles Magnus & Co. Beginning around the middle of the nineteenth century, regular and bird's-eye views of North American cities became very popular. These were originally issued in a large folio size, but publishers, such as Magnus, soon realized that there was a market for smaller versions of these prints. Magnus was perhaps the most prolific of these publishers and he issued his small engravings in different formats. Some were issued with black painted margins, some with plan margins, and some as illustrations on lettersheets. Such letter sheets preceded postcards as useful mementoes.

Nice copy of a scarcer book than the first edition published two years prior in 1845 with only 468pp. Additional material in this volume amounts to about one third of the first edition.Major-General Sir Isaac Brock was the cousin of the author and editor, Ferdinand Brock Tupper. "Ferdinand Brock Tupper, the historian of Guernsey, was a far relative of Sir Charles, Canadian statesman. Presumed a special gift due to the Confederation of Canada in 1867.
