Description:
Paris: Cadart & Luquet, 1876. Etching on watermarked D & C Blauw cream laid paper, 6 x 9 1/4 inches (151 x 234 mm), full margins. Significant toning, handling creases and some mottling due to moisture in the lower sheet area and into the image. There is some edge wear and creasing, as well as paper tape remnants along the top sheet edge, verso. Félicien Victor Joseph Rops (7 July 1833 - 23 August 1898) was a Belgian artist associated with Symbolism and the Parisian Fin-de Siecle. He was a painter, illustrator, caricaturist and a prolific and innovative print maker, particularly in intaglio (etching and aquatint). Although not well known to the general public, Rops was greatly respected by his peers and actively pursued and celebrated as an illustrator by the publishers, authors, and poets of his time. He provided frontispieces and illustrations for Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly, Charles Baudelaire, Charles De Coster, Théophile Gautier, Joris-Karl Huysmans, Stéphane Mallarmé, Joséphin Péladan, Paul… Read More

1890. Heliogravure on light weight Japan paper, 12 x 8 inches (304 x 202 mm), full margins. Titled in pencil in the lower right margin. In good condition with some minor handling creases, dog-eared lower right corner, and adhesive residue at the top right and left corners on the verso. Non archival auction sticker (appx 1"x1") on the top right corner on the verso, along with framer's notations in pencil. All condition issues fall well outside of the image area. An impression of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the Musée Félicien Rops, Namur. [Revens 157]. In effort to keep her repeat clientele safe and happy, we see a madam performing a regular examination on one of her brothel workers. Likely the madam is looking for the signs of syphilis, the early signs of which would present as a rosy colored rash on the hands, arms, and thighs, among other places. Description:
London, 1839. Lithograph in colors on card stock (as issued), 15 x 10 5/8 inches (380 x 268 mm), full margins. In good condition with some minor toning and some extremely minor and unobtrusive edge wear at the left sheet edge, well outside of the image area. A very fine image from Boys' Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp, Rouen etc,. Printed by Charles Hullmandel, deluxe edition. This image, which was produced entirely by means of lithography, was printed in oil color, and appears exactly as it was pulled from the press. It represents part of the first real challenge to the supremacy in England of the hand colored aquatint as a media, which is an older technique in which the hand coloring is applied after the image is pulled from the press. An impression of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

New York: John Taylor Arms, 1930. Etching on antique cream laid paper with a fancy "G" watermark, 7 1/8 x 16 1/2 inches (182 x 442 mm), full margins. Signed, dated and inscribed "Ed. 70" in pencil, lower margin. From a total edirion of 81 plus 5 trial proofs. Printed by Henry E. Carling. Number 18 from the Italian Series. A superb impression of this scarce print, with all of the subtleties and details of the reflections in the water printing clearly. [Fletcher 232] [Illustrated: Page 192, Arms, Dorothy Noyes, "Hilltowns and Cities of Northern Italy"]. Along with his constant companion and wife, Dorothy Noyes, Arms spent decades exploring and documenting gothic structures throughout Europe. Noyes, an accomplished travel writer, had gifted Arms an etching set for Christmas in 1913, during the time that the couple called New York home. Arms, having been trained in architecture, was sparked and fascinated by the potential for exceptional precision that etching provided as a media. His immediate… Read More

Paris, 1839. Color lithograph on medium-weight cream wove paper, 15 3/4 x 11 inches (400 x 278 mm), full margins. In good condition with some toning at the top margins, and general light, scattered surface soiling. Prout created this lithograph after one of his own watercolors for inclusion in Sketches in France, Switzerland and Italy; Sketches by Samuel Prout, Plate V, 1915. Samuel Prout was born in Plymouth in 1783 to Samuel Prout Senior, a naval outfitter, and Mary Cater, a homemaker; the fourth of fourteen children. Prout grew up in the countryside, and spent his summers as a youth sketching and painting the bucolic valleys, thatched cottages, water mills, and serene rivers in Devon. This ink and wash is likely one of Prout's early works from the years when he was under the tutelage of author, artist and educator Dr. John Bidlake.

Paris: L'Artiste, 1875. Heliogravure and drypoint on cream laid paper. 6 3/8 x 4 1/2 inches (160 x 112 mm) with full margins. Second state (of 2). Scattered rippling from moisture at sheet edges. Scattered handling creases throughout. Hard crease along extreme right sheet edge, one half inch from edge. Scattered light foxing, band of discoloration extending through image area. Ink notation on verso, pencil notations on recto, both well outside of image area. [Exsteens 300]. The first state image of La Parabole Du Semeur, as it is described in Exteens, was printed both in a large and small format. The grande planche, which measures approximately 350 x 250 mm, and the petite planche, which measures approximately 160 x 110 mm. Though a specific explanation is lacking, it appears as though The L'Artiste edition was printed from a plate created from the petite planche with the use of heliogravure, and subsequently finished with drypoint etching by an artist other than Rops. This accounts for the use of… Read More

Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1971. Limited Edition. Fine. Albrecht Dürer. 8vo; 9 x 6 in. (230 x 153 mm); 222 pp. One of 135 copies on Magnani paper, Dante type. 37 woodcut illustrations after Dürer with accompanying poetic text by Fra' Benedictus Chelidonius. Original russet morocco-backed boards, gilt fillets and titlling, t.e.g., others uncut, plastic dust-jacket, leather-tipped board slip-case. [Mardersteig 171]. In the years 1508 to 1511 Albrecht Dürer created three famous sets of engravings, two Passion of Christ and the Life of Mary. Among them the Passio Christi, known as the "Small Passion" to distunguished it from the one with bigger format, is considered DÜRER'S MASTERPIECE. This edition was issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Albrech Dürer's birth. It includes 37 images, including the engraving on the frontispiece, and is notable for the artist's focus on the essence of depiction. 1924. Etching on antique cream laid paper, 5 x 2 inches (127 x 52 mm), full margins. Signed and dated in pencil lower margin. From the editoin of 156, printed by Frederick Reynolds. In superb condition, an excellent impression with good inking. [Fletcher 141]. Paper: Arms was typical of the artists of this period - he was obsessed with paper, a mania for collecting paper that could/would improve an edition. The quantity he left after his death, distributed by his wife to fellow artists, witnesses his love for finely made paper -paper interesting because of texture, color, distinctive weave. The earliest paper known to have been used by Arms came from a Baptismal Register Kirchen Ordnung, The Reformed Church, Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, 1708, bought in a bookshop in Philadelphia.
