This is the first Dutch edition of "LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER" by D.H. Lawrence - complete unexpurgated edition. 1956 1st edition thus; William Heinemann; The Hague. The book is written entirely in English. From the dust jacket: "Lady Chatterley's Lover was Lawrence's last novel. On it he lavished especial care and into it he put his final message. Lady Chatterley and the game-keeper Mellors he holds up as an example to an industrial age suffering from 'sex in the head,' 'a new phallic tenderness between man and woman.' Lawrence prophecied that it would only bring him more hatred and abuse. His intuition was, as usual, right - but only temporarily. Lady Chatterley's Lover has long been acknowledged to be a novel of great power and beauty."Condition:Clean covers; light soiling at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Sharp cover corners. Softcover. This edition contains an "Open Letter to the Public" written by Frieda Lawrence (D.H.'s wife) providing reasons why this may be the most important of the three versions of the novel: first authorized unexpurgated edition; properly edited ("stripped of all the little typographical mistakes in the original edition"); affordably priced "Cheap Edition" ("issued at a price that would bring the book within reach of everybody"). Though in poor condition, the original front and back covers of the dust jacket are included (the spine is missing). The book had been banned in the United States and England for obscenity - at the bottom of the back cover is printed the following: "Not to be Introduced into the British Empire or the U.S.A."
