Twentieth century quarter brown morocco, marbled paper covered boards, spine lavishly decorated in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some shelfwear and rubbing to joints. Upper cover has the remains of an auction label reading Lot 386. Internally very good. Overall a nice copy. This sweet little book is a short version of the Regimen sanitatis Salernitanum written in the 12th or 13th century and generally attributed to John of Milan. This abridged version consists of 125 epigrams in Latin verse about everyday health and medical matters such as how to wash your hands and what to do if you drink too much wine at supper. Beneath the Latin is the French translation, also in verse. The volume also contains a short Discours sur L'École de Salerne.

London: Printed for William Shrowsbery at the Bible in Duke Lane 1682. FIRST EDITION. Small 8vo. pp. xii, + 128. Engraved portrait. Full contemporary old speckled calf, raised bands. Front hinge split but holding. Some scuffing and wear to the lower cover and to the spine with loss to foot of the spine. The contents are in excellent condition with very slight spotting in places. The front pastedown has an ownership inscription (in pencil, in an 18th century hand) of Hamilton Russ. Overall this is a nice copy of the first biography of perhaps England's leading lawyer at the most precarious and difficult moment of its history. He prepared the defence of Archbishop Laud against charges of treason. His defence was on the point of succeeding in court until Parliament overrode it and passed an Act of Attainder declaring Laud guilty of treason (notwithstanding the evidence) and sentencing him to death - an early, but not isolated instance of rule by Parliamentary dictatorship. Three volumes each consisting of a suite of sixty coloured plates, showing examples of polychrome decoration, design and ornament from three broad historical periods, tipped-in on grey card with descriptive captions. These are housed, loose, in their original portfolio folders of grey paper covered boards with beige cloth hinges. The title is printed in grey and yellow on the upper covers with a Greek helmet device in the centre. Title printed in black on the spine. Some shelfwear and spotting to the folders but overall in very good condition. The plates are in excellent condition, bright and vivid. The grey cards to which they are attached are generally very good with a little creasing to the edges of some of them in part three and with a tear to the top left corner of the title leaf of part three with loss but no damage to the image. Half titles in all three volumes and advertisements as called for. Original green/blue cloth with ribbed pattern to the borders of the upper and lower covers. White paper labels to the spines with the title and author printed in black. The label on volume two is torn at the head with some loss. Some wear to the extremities and small tears to the head of the spines and to the foot of the spine of volume three. Some internally cracking to the spine of volume three although the binding is still strong. Contents are in very good/near fine condition with no significant marking or foxing. A nice set of this influential and ever-popular work which combines travelling writing, autobiography and fiction. Can we call Borrow the first psycho-geographer?

Bound in moiré cloth. Title in blind at centre of upper cover and stamped in gilt to spine. Very slight marking to upper cover but otherwise in excellent condition and internally near fine. The slip case is covered in the same material and has some soiling and a red mark on one side. A beautiful copy of this limited edition of a notorious work of lascivious eroticism.

The pages are unopened and are loose in fifteen green paper wrappers on the front of which is the title page information and on the back, advertisements for other work by J. Justin Storck. Housed in the original folder of green quarter linen and green paper-covered boards. The front board has the title page information printed in black on pale green paper and pasted on. It also has the label of Louis de Meuleneere, 21, Rue du Chene, Bruxelles. This firm was a great Brussels booksellers and the predecessor to Tulkens from where this book was bought when it closed in 2008. Dark green ribbon of the edges of the boards to tie the folder together. The folder is in very good condition with slight marking and shelfwear and some staining to the white endpapers. Foxing and marking to the covers but overall a very good copy and internally in excellent condition, especially the photographs which are by Laure Albin Guillot, Pierre Boucher, Man Ray and Roger Schall. The first half of the book is a brief history of the nude in art from antiquity to the 20th century and there isa chapter at the end on the technique of nude photography. The photographs are grouped according to "Les Diverses Conceptions du Nu" which includes Man Ray's "Stylised Nudes" and Pierre Boucher's "Les Fantasmagories du Nu", an extraordinary collection of surrealist works.

A nice copy of an important book creating an interesting link between two leading Irish scientists of the nineteenth century. The first part is a reprint of the six lectures given by Lloyd on unpolarized light in 1836 while the second part (on polarized light) appears for the first time. Rare in commerce. Humphrey Lloyd (1800-1881) was the professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy at Trinity College Dublin and was one of the leading proponents of the wave-theory of light - the idea that light is formed from vibrating waves rather than particles which was the Newtonian theory. A striking binding (unsigned) in various shades of brown/tan morocco in blocks of wavy patterns decorated with small gilt "flames". Lettered in gilt to spine. The front and rear pastedowns have bands of brown, tan and purple morocco decorated with the gilt "flames". A very nice two volume set in a most attractive binding.

Number 259 of an unknown number of first printing copies of this striking and strikingly designed collection of beach photographs. The cover is card although with a faux-satin finish, decorated with a polka dot lenticular design, lettered in black. Crease to upper cover but otherwise very good. Printed on a variety of paper types from high quality gloss to soft kitchen-paper. The text, in French, is an essay by the photographer Sophie Baiss-Fabiani and, separately, an interview with her. Malmaison n.p. 1813. Letter signed "Josephine", addressed to the "Directeur Général des Postes," Malmaison, 12 February 1813. Text in French. One page, 226 x 185mm (mild creases). Seventy-seven words. In a nice example of patronage Josephine uses this letter to the Directeur Général des Postes to recommend a young man called Gaulthier for a job within the Post service. She says that if he can agree to this, then it will make two people happy as a job will assist Gaulthier in his marriage to the daughter of a woman in service to Josephine and whose father is "valet de chambre" of the Viceroi. We have been unable to discover if M. Gaulthier was given a job but he had an in with the right person. Josephine, who by this point was no longer married to Napoleon although he had made her the Duchess of Navarre, was the aunt of the wife of the Directeur Général des Postes, Antoine-Marie Chamans, comte de Lavalette so perfectly placed. Both volumes have the armorial bookplate of Kennet of the Dene on the front pastedown. A nice copy, with contents in particularly good condition, of one of the seminal works of the eighteenth century.

Otherwise, near fine; an excellent copy of a beautifully produced book. pp7-17: essays by Eugen Blume ("Conversation on the Beach too long") and Manfred Leve ("Photographing Block Beuys"), text in German and English. pp20-256, black and white photographs of Beuys's work.There are two short collections of photographs from exhibitions in Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach which form part of the "Ur-history" of the Block Beuys installation. The rest of the book (pp.40-256) is devoted to the seven-room installation that constitutes "Block Beuys". This is a vast collection of sculptures, works on paper and relics from 1949-72 exploring Beuys's own ideas of art and German history. Leve's stunning photographs make a work of art out of Beuys's art.
