Charles-Eugène-Gabriel de la Croix, Marquis de Castries (1727-1801), Marshal of France, fought in all the wars in Flanders and Germany from 1743 to 1763. Modena, 21 May 1688. In Latin, untranslated. 2 pp. 10 x 8 inches, waterstained, with damage at centre fold, other blemishes at edges, worn, old repairs. Rinaldo d'Este (1655 –1737) was Duke of Modena and Reggio from 1695 until his death, as well as a member of the House of Este. Created cardinal on 2 September 1686, he left the ecclesiastical career in 1694 to succeed his nephew Francesco II as duke. He married Princess Charlotte Felicitas of Brunswick-Lüneburg (1671–1710), eldest daughter of Johann Friedrich, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Benedicta Henrietta of the Palatinate.

Paris, 28 December 1792. In French. 3 pp. 9 x 7 inches, some light stains, in good condition. A relic of one of the tragic figures of revolutionary France. Jean Marie Roland de la Platière (1734-1793), revolutionary, Minister of the Interior. In 1793 he attacked Robespierre and attempted to save the life of the King. He was forced to flee from Paris to Normandy. Roland committed suicide (November 15, 1793) when he learned of the sentence and execution of his wife.

The autograph of John Philip (1775-1851), Scottish missionary in South Africa. He tried to support independent native states against colonial aggression, and attempted to prevent the Kaffir War. He was the most prominent politician in Cape Colony for thirty years.

Description:
Camp at Carresbrook [Isle of Wight], 26 July 1740. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, in good condition. Charles Cathcart, 8th Lord Cathcart (1686–1740), was a distinguished military officer who had served with Marlborough in Flanders, and particularly at the Battle of Sheriffmuir during the 1715 Jacobite Rebeillion. He became a Major General in 1739 and in 1740 was appointed Commander-in-Chief of all British Forces in North America. He embarked at Spithead with his expeditionary force towards the end of 1740 but died at sea on 20 december. He is buried at Prince Rupert’s Bay, Dominica. In this letter Cathcart states that Joseph Wilson now belongs to Colonel Douglas’s Regiment of Marines under Cathcart’s command “in the present Expedition”, and asks his correspondent to give instructions to the Collector at Aldeburgh to send the money before Wilson proceeds.

Sir James Nichol McAdam (1785-1852), Knight General Surveyor of Turnpikes, the "Colossus of Roads", was knighted for managing turnpike trusts. He was one of the three sons of John Loudon McAdam, the famous road builder.

Edouard Mortier, Duc de Trévise (1768-1835), Marshal of France, distinguished himself in Friedland (1807), in Spain (1808-09), and in the Russian campaign (1812) when he was appointed Governor of Moscow. Premier of France (1834-35). In 1835 he was killed by the terrorist Fieschi’s bomb at the National Guard review attended by Louis Philippe.

HM Ship Tyne, Islay [Peru], 12 August 1833. 1 page 11 x 8 inches, minor blemishes, lower section toned, otherwise good. Rear-Admiral Charles Hope (1798-1854), second son of Charles Hope, Lord President of the Court of Session in Scotland, was Captain of HMS Tyne on the South American station, 1830-1834. On 2 January 1833 Charles Hope in HMS Tyne had arrived (and joined HMS Clio) at Port Egmont to reassert the British claim to sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, and demanded that the Argentine (or Buenos Ayres) flag be lowered.

Jean Jacques Régis de Cambacérès (1753-1824), duke of Parma, lawyer and statesman, concerned himself with legal and legislative work, even during the Terror. As Napoleon’s second consul he played an important part in drawing up the Civil Code, later called the Code Napoleon. He was Minister of Justice between July and December, 1799.

Santiago de Galicia, 1 December 1818. In French. 2¼ pages 8 x 6 inches, with the address panel, remains of guard, a few minor blemishes only. José Vazquez de Figueroa (1770-1855), Spanish naval officer who became Minister of the Navy in 1813 and again in 1816, when he tried to improve and reform the navy. In 1818 he was imprisoned at Santiago de Compostela. He resumed the Navy portfolio in 1834-35.
