Volume I: [2],iv,310 pp.; Volume II: [4],369 pp. Each volume with 32 plates inserted, of which many are chromolithographs, and with numerous illustrations in the text. Nice tight copy of a classic.

Eight plates, plus two sheets [an introductory essay by Forest and Danie Dubos (a collaborator of Forest and Georges Pichard) and an end sheet with publication and copyright information, plus five small drawings in duotone]. Each plate measures 11 x 14.25." First plate signed and numbered by Forest. Contents as new, trivial shelf wear only to the portfolio, near fine. Nice book.

Paris: Presses Universitaires de France, 1941. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. True first edition, inscribed by Halbwachs to a Sorbonne colleague, philosopher Rene Le Senne. Halbwachs was later taken by the Nazis and died at Buchenwald in 1945. Halbwachs' death is described in Jorge Semprun's harrowing account of the concentration camp. Halbwachs first studied philosophy with Henri Bergson, but later became Emile Durkheim's most important student. The Legendary Topography is his masterpiece, one of the truly great works of European sociology. The book is by far the most sophisticated discussion of how the monuments we see in the Holy Land were created by humans looking for the sacred. The green boards are bright and fresh with almost no wear and all titles clear. The Dustjacket (fun 1920s design), rarely seen, is here in nice condition: minor edge wear to spine crown and a few very short closed tears, otherwise nice and clean with minimal handling wear, not price-slipped. NO fading or annoying defects. Looks very attractive in the mylar sleeve. A nice Lacoste.

Original publisher's olive pictorial cloth gilt, top edges gilt. previous owner's "property of" signature on the front black and a nice bookplate on the front pastedown, otherwise free of all markings. Book is a strong VG+, just some fraying to the very top of the cloth of the spine. Clean and free of all foxing, binding tight, no splits. A nice copy. True first edition, with the illustration in dark brown ink and providing no information about the illustrator. Howes A400; Zamorano Eighty 2.

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. This copy comes from the collection of George Barr McCutcheon and has his bookplate. McCutcheon was a popular novelist who died in 1928, now more famous for his collections of Dickens and Stevenson. This copy has been preserved in a custom built 3/4 green moracco slipcase. Inside the slipcase is a folding green case which actually holds the book. This case is built like a tank. The gold and banded leather spine is VG++: trivial wear. the sides of the box have a couple of smallish nicks and some wear to the marbel paper, nothing very serious. From the McCutcheon sale of 1925.

London: 'Lawn Tennis', 1903. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/-1. English first in blue cloth. Book is square, clean, and free of all markings. Spine is somewhat darkened, but the lettering is still clear. All of the plates are present (wonderful period tennis photos). There is heavy spotting to a single page which hold the authors' portrait, almost certainly a glue defect in the paper itself. No such problems elsewhere in the book. Solid copy.

Paris: Gallimard, 1952. First Edition. Paperback. near fine. True first edition, #7 of 55 on fine vellum paper by Lafuma Navarre. This is a beautiful survivor -- completely uncut, with no notable defects. As always, the paper covers yap slightly over the textblock, but this copy is free of all markings, tears, foxing, or paper splits. A lovely copy of one of most compelling books of the twentieth century. Impeccable exemplaire de tête de l’édition originale.

There is faint bit of spotting to the wrapper, nearly invisible (see photo). The contents are completely fine and without even a hint of foxing, wear, or soiling. Loose in sheets as issued. Rare in sheets suitable for display. Easily one of the most beautiful books printed in the 20th century. One of 177 copies printed on Japon, signed by Schmied. "The title page illustration was the most intricate of all of Schmied's illustrations, requiring some forty-five different blocks to achieve the lacquer-like quality he wanted." Ritchie 35. A beautiful copy of a beautiful book.
