Description:
Madison: Links, 1968. First edition. Tabloid format newspaper printed in black on newsprint; unpaginated [12 pp.]; illus. No issue number or date is provided, but we believe this to be the second issue of this underground high school newspaper, published in September 1968. By the early 1970s many underground high school newspapers emerged and most were members of the Cooperative High School Independent Press Syndicate, later Youth Liberation Press, but LINKS preceded CHIPS' formation in 1969. This issue includes coverage of news & events around Madison and from other high schools around the country; also comics, a crossword puzzle and reprints of stories from other papers. The paper is less radical and offensive than most of its descendants, which seems like a purposeful attempt by the editors to make the ideas more accessible. Some toning to newsprint, else a Near Fine example. On three institutions via OCLC purport holdings of any issues (Univ. of Michigan, Wisconsin Historical Society… Read More

Description:
New York: Robert Carter & Brother, 1879. First American edition. Octavo. Brown cloth ornately stamped in black and gilt; vi, [3], 2-342 pp., [1] adverts. Although there is no date printed anywhere in the book, a contemporary ownership signature dated 1879 leads us to believe that the Robert Carter edition was the first American edition and published the same year as the English edition of J. F. Shaw. Robert Carter appears to have been Ms. Holt's American publisher, as an advert in the rear lists 11 of her other titles for sale. Emily Sarah Holt (1836-1893) was a Victorian Protestant and a prolific author of historical fiction. In Lady Sybil's Choice, Holt's female protagonist undergoes personal and religious transformation during the Crusades. A Very Good copy with some chipping to crown; corners bumped. We find no copies of the American first edition in commerce (2015) and only one copy held institutionally (University of Rochester). Scarce thus.

The group issued a series of pamphlets - the cover art of which is displayed on the flyers here - criticizing the oppression and degraded quality of life faced by workers under Castro's dictatorship.
