Ristigouche, P. Q.: The Micmac Messenger, 1921. 8vo, pp. [4], xii, [5]-456; red buckram with gilt title on spine, red stained edges; very good. Liturgy in Mi'kmaq. Mi'kmaq ideograms are the oldest known native writing north of Mexico, and were adapted for the use of Catholic missionary work in the 17th century. The first attempt at printing a book of religious instruction in Micmac hieroglyphs was fraught with difficulty, took almost ten years to produce, and a large number of the resulting books were lost at sea. This is the later state of the second edition, with prefaces in French, Mi'kmaq and English inserted into the preliminaries.

Berkeley, Calif: Curtis Faville, 1972. Tall 8vo, pp. 28; original printed gray wrappers; near fine. From the library of Kim Merker. Curtis Faville's L Magazine ran to five issues in three installments, one annually from 1972 to 1974. The format for each installment was unique, from oblong to square trim, textured to glossy cover stock, letterpress to offset. Following the cessation of the magazine, Faville's related imprint L Publications (Kensington, California) produced books by Bill Berkson, Faville, Ted Greenwald, and Robert Grenier between 1975 and 1978. In this inaugural issue the contributors included Dave Morice (who has signed the inside back cover), Philip Whalen, James Schuyler, Denis Johnson, Donald Justice, among others.

Folio, pp. vi, [24], 385, [3]; engraved frontispiece portrait of the author, folding engraved portrait of his patron, Francesco Bonanno del Bosco (with a 3" tear entering from the gutter - no loss), woodcut initials, typographic ornaments; a good, sound copy in contemporary limp vellum lettered in ink on spine. Four copies in OCLC, all in Europe. Harvard College Library bookplate and a discrete release stamp on the verso of the title page. Campailla (1668-1740) was an odd-looking autodidact from Modica on Sicily who fought syphilis rheumatism in a "modern" way, using the "guaiacum barrels" or "vapour stoves" that he had invented. He was also elected senator of his district seven times. In 1709 he published the first six songs of this philosophical poem Adam, or the World Created, then dedicated in its full (twenty songs), "to Charles VI of Austria, Emperor and King of Sicily." Olschki 18404 citing the octavo edition of 1757.

Two chronicles of the kings of Great Britain, both in French. The first chronicle is a summary, while the second gives more details of the reigns. The original chronicle ends at 1274, at the beginning of Edward I's reign; the Wroxham and Sempringham continuations extend the chronicle to 1326. These documents are of interest to the philologist as examples of 13th-century written French in England; Glover provides a facing English translation.
