Description:
4to.. Handbill, printed in black on yellow stock, for this early event from the burgeoning LA hip scene, taking place the same month LSD became illegal and preceding the famous riots on Sunset Strip. The featured performer was seven-year-old soul singer Little Gary Ferguson, and among the other performers were The Mugwumgs soon to be renamed The Mamas & the Papas. However, the most intriguing attraction was "The world-famous artist and sculptor VITO with his wife, his child and his entire entourage of dancers and freakers." Vito Paulekas was a noted bohemian and bizarre character in the LA hippie scene who was the leader of a band of "freaks" who lived a semi-communal lifestyle and engaged in "sex orgies and free-form dancing whenever they could." Their dancing at various clubs often overshadowed the main performers. He rented a rehearsal space to Arthur Lee and Love, as well as the Byrds, and he and his troupe (some of of whom became The GTO's a.k.a. Girls Together Outrageously) accompanied the… Read More

Paris: Silvestre, 1892.. 4to. Softbound (no cloth issued). First edition. Photographs of a theatrical production, a pantomime, presented one time only by Mariani at Le Theatre Angelo Mariani in 1892. The photos depict scenes of a male and female mime enjoying the pleasures of Mariani's coca wine. Angelo Mariani formulated his cocaine-based beverage in 1871 while working at a drugstore in Paris. A few years later this elixir of wine and coca leaves that would cure all ills and "make the weak strong" became wildly popular especially after Mariani used his exceptional skills as a saleman and promoter to garner endorsements from Thomas Edison, President McKinley, Jules Verne, Sandra Bernhardt, Pope Leo X11, Robert Louis Stephenson, and even Queen Victoria! Mariani published several volumes of cocaine testimonials, postcards advertising his product, commissioned fashionable posters from famed Belle Epoque designer Jules Cheret, and even produced this stage show extolling it's virtues. Description:
Honolulu: Privately Published by the photographer, ca. 1910.. Gurrey is most famous as "the grandfather of surf photography" due to his legendary 1914 "The Surf Riders of Hawaii," the first ever book on surfing that he handmade copies of between 1912 and 1914. The book featured 8 small gelatin silver prints that documented the surf scene in Waikiki, and included the first shots of Duke Kahanamoku surfing. There are only 8 copies of this book in existance and when they surface at auction they sell in the $30,000. range. However, in 1910 Gurrey published another book, "The Idyls of Hawaii," that focused on the unspoiled, tropical paradise that was Hawaii. This photo shows a large palm tree and the ocean in the foreground with the palm-lined beach going off into the distance where we see mountains whose peaks are topped by a layer of clouds. In 1909 Gurrey opened an art gallery in Honolulu that primarily featured his photographs---noteworthy because photography was beyond the purview of most… Read More
