A copy of this edition was in Jonathan Swift's library, now in the Swift collection at the University of Pennsyvania. This is a reimpression line for line of the Leyden edition of 1657, which was a line for line reimpression of the edition of 1638, the text of which was the work of French scholar Claude Saumaise (1558 - 1653), first published in 1609, with the 1638 text including the editio princeps of the Liber Memorialis of Lucius Ampelius.

First published in 1756, Mirabeau's work quickly excited the attention of other population theorists. The above volumes constitute the third edition of the first three parts of the six that Mirabeau eventually published. The fourth part appeared in 1758 and the remaining two parts in 1760, after Mirabeau had made the acquaintance of Quesnay, whose influence was clear in the later parts. Crosilhes, Libraire, of Villeneuve-sur-Lot, "Ou l'on trouve un assortiment de Livres classiques et autres bons Ouvrages...." Cardinal Melchior de Polignac (1661 - 1742) spent his early career as a diplomat for France before being made Archbishop of Auch in 1726. He died before his refutation of Lucretius could be published. It was first published in 1748.

Page [112] in this edition is a drop-title for La Société des Francs-péteurs, written by Pierre-Jean Le Corvaisier, which continues to page 216. First published in 1751 in Wesfphalia, with only 108 pages, and it has probably never been out of print, or reprint, since that date. Hurtaut (1719 - 1791) was allegedly the son of a horse trader, and his upwardly mobile aspirations led him to the Ecole Militaire in Paris, where he taught Latin. The Ecole opened in 1750, so he must have composed this work while he was teaching young soldiers-to-be, and they would no doubt have derived some juvenile enjoyment from the knowledge of their teacher's interests. One gentleman was said to have been so accomplished in l'Art de Peter, that he could produce the tune of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, from the designated apeture, an achievement that smacks of art. Jacques, vis-a-vis Mathurins No. 36, [no date], [c. 1780]. 24mo, 93 x 58 mms., pp. 12, 24, engraved throughout, with engraved title-page, 12 engraved illustrations, one engraved plate of music (browned with engraving opposite also browned) "Le Fossé de Cythere," attractively bound in contemporary full vellum with gilt borders to a floral motif, gilt floral ornament in centre of each board, embroidered spine (slightly worn), all edges gilt, contained in a (probably later) slipcase of marbled boards within plain boards. One of many libertine almanacs for lovers, with several bawdy French songs, and appropriate engraved illustrations only two of which hint at any indelicacy. A very attractive item. ESTC lists 12 separate issues or editions for 1790. This is T91446.

In Roma, Nella Stamperia d'Antonio de' Rossi all Piazza di Cerli, 1714. 4to, 212 mx 156, pp. [xii], 487 [488 - 502 index], engraved vignette on title-page, 6 historiated initials for each of the six chapters, contemporary marginal note in ink on page 90, contemporary vellum, yapp edges lettered in ink on spine; some worming and staining to top margin of a2 and a5, minor worming on rear paste-down end-paper, but a very good copy. The Italian poet and literary critic Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni (1663 - 1728) was one of the founders of the Accademia dell'Arcadia in1690. He became general guardian after the expulsion of Gian Vincenzo Gravina , the other founder of the Academy. Gravina had in mind a very ambitious cultural renewal project for the academy, but the other Arcadians preferred the more moderate proposal of Crescimbeni himself, which aimed to restore literary good taste against the baroque degenerations of the previous century. Joseph de Berchoux (1760 - 1838) published this poem in 1801, and it was reprinted several times. He was the person who allegedly coined the word "gastronomy." Priscilla Parkhurst Ferguson in her article, "A Cultural Field in the Making: Gastronomy in 19th-Century France" in the American Journal of Sociology (1998) describes the poem as "quite dreadful," but the engravings are attractive. Small 12mo (in 6s), 155 x 103 mms., pp. vii [viii blank] [9] - 22 [23 and 24 blank], mid 19th century half calf, marbled boards, brown morocco label; previous bookseller's ticket on front past-down end-paper, blind stamp of "Le Viaconte G l'Onor" [sic] on recto of front free end-paper. The French bookseller's catalogue description pasted to the front paste-down end-paper tell us that this facetious pamphlet derives from the name of La Gouelle, the maitre d'hotel in Caen, who died in 1828, and whose contemporaries said of him, "meritait entierement la reputation de naive et pretentieuse recherche d'elocution qu'on lui prete dans cet opuscule." I think we've all encountered maitre d's like that, not only in France, but England, the United States, Germany, etc; and a phenomenon not necessarily found in the chief waiter in a hotel. This work was first published in 1781 after Condillac's death in 1780. Despite its title, the work has several chapters on language, e. g., "Comment le langage d'action analyse la pensée." Aarsleff (From Locke to Saussure) notes, "In his final revisions in De l'art de penser he added a note to a chapter entitled 'De la nécessité des signs.' The note said: 'After the printing of my Essai, from which the largest part of this work is drawn, I have completed the demonstration of the necessity of signs, in my Grammar and in my Logic.'"
