Description:
A Hambourg, Chez Chretien Herold, 1758. 2 volumes. 12mo, pp. [xii], 523 [524 contents]; [iv], 510 [511 contents, 512 blank], including half-titles, contemporary mottled French calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments, morocco labels; first six leaves in volume 1 misfolded, some damp-staining and minor worming in last part of volume 2, lacks numbering label on volume 2, some gilt gone from spine of volume 2 and text of last few leaves slightly affected by damp. First published in 1756, Mirabeau's work quickly excited the attention of other population theorists. The above volumes constitute the third edition of the first three parts of the six that Mirabeau eventually published. The fourth part appeared in 1758 and the remaining two parts in 1760, after Mirabeau had made the acquaintance of Quesnay, whose influence was clear in the later parts. Among the Scottish authors whom he cites are David Hume (who might have had mixed feelings to be described as "Auteur Anglais") and Robert… Read More

Description:
En Westphalie, Chez Florent-Q, rue Pet-en-Guele, au Soufflet. 1776. Page [112] in this edition is a drop-title for La Société des Francs-péteurs, written by Pierre-Jean Le Corvaisier, which continues to page 216. First published in 1751 in Wesfphalia, with only 108 pages, and it has probably never been out of print, or reprint, since that date. Hurtaut (1719 - 1791) was allegedly the son of a horse trader, and his upwardly mobile aspirations led him to the Ecole Militaire in Paris, where he taught Latin. The Ecole opened in 1750, so he must have composed this work while he was teaching young soldiers-to-be, and they would no doubt have derived some juvenile enjoyment from the knowledge of their teacher's interests. One gentleman was said to have been so accomplished in l'Art de Peter, that he could produce the tune of the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, from the designated apeture, an achievement that smacks of art. In 1775, Hurtaut published a very… Read More

Jean Bloch in "Gaspard Guillard de Beaurieu's L'Eleve de la Nature and Rousseau's Emile" (French Studies, July, 1972), that "little has been heard of Gaspard Guillard de Beaurieu's L'Eleve de la Nature and its relationship to Rousseau's Emile since Emile Legouis's Taylorian Lecture of 1925. Yet, despite its obvious naivete of detail, its sentimentality and exaggeration, de Beaurieu's book holds what would appear to be a unique position among the host of those which… Read More

He became general guardian after the expulsion of Gian Vincenzo Gravina , the other founder of the Academy. Gravina had in mind a very ambitious cultural renewal project for the academy, but the other Arcadians preferred the more moderate proposal of Crescimbeni himself, which aimed to restore literary good taste against the baroque degenerations of the previous century.
