The inherent joke of starting with a fifth edition is typical of Ticknell's humor. One of two 1554 Antwerp editions of Cieza de León's highly regarded history of Peru, and the earliest obtainable edition, following the first edition printed in Seville the previous year. The author, the foremost soldier-chronicler of the conquest, served under Pedro de La Gasca in his campaign against Gonzalo Pizarro during the civil war in Peru in the years following the conquest. Spine rubbed, spine ends lightly chipped, edges and corners worn. Good. Second edition of the first treaty to officially define the border between Bolivia and Brazil, agreed by the Treaty of Ayacucho in 1867. The treaty ceded a significant portion of Bolivia's northern and eastern territory to Brazil. The agreement was concluded without much knowledge of the terrain, and according to legend, Bolivia's dictator Mariano Melgarejo agreed to give away the northern lands partly in exchange for a white horse. Both the first and second editions are quite scarce, with only a handful of copies of each located by OCLC. PALAU 111374 (ref).

Contemporary limp vellum, spine lettered. Titlepage and first few leaves mutilated; p.365 to end also mutilated, as is the rear cover. Light dampstaining, some slight worming. All missing sections of the text are provided in photocopy. Poor. A stately volume prepared to record the festivities surrounding the beatification of Saint Toribio Alfonso de Mogrovejo (1538- 1606), second Archbishop of Lima. Mogrovejo was beatified in 1679 by Pope Innocent XI and canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1729. This work provides a comprehensive description of Lima and an ecclesiastical history of the diocese. Contemporary inscriptions on titlepage. Else just about very good. Ex-Horticultural Society of New York, with bookplate but no other markings. Second edition, revised, after the first of 1742, of this important French work on sun dials. Rivard (1697-1778) was an important French mathematician who was influential in the introduction of the teaching of mathematics in the University of Paris. His other works include the ELEMENTS DE MATHEMATIQUES (1740) and TRAITE DE LA SPHERE (1741), among others on geometry and mathematics. The NUC locates only four copies of this edition (MB, MH, CtY, DLC).

Original green cloth, stamped in blind, gilt lettering, neatly rebacked. Text somewhat toned, but plates clean. Small old dampstain in upper blank margin of two final plates. Overall very good. In a folding green cloth box, leather label. An important work, with eleven fine plates of Guadeloupe scenes, and with text that covers all aspects of life in Guadeloupe. Views include picturesque sights in the countryside, scenes in the main towns (Moule and l'Anse Bertrand), and a large panoramic view of the town and harbor of Pointe-à- Pietre. Budan was born in Guadeloupe in 1827 and became an accomplished painter of portraits, historical and religious subjects, flowers, and murals. The National Library of Chile attributes the work to Ernesto Malinowski, a Polish-born engineer who was responsible for major public works projects in Peru in the latter 19th-century. While his name does not appear in the work, the end of the text is signed with the printed note: "E.M. Diciembre de 1858." While focusing on the economic and monetary situation in Peru and the activities of the Casa de Moneda, the author also cites comparable instances in the United States, England, France, Spain, Germany, Holland, and Belgium. A decree issued in January of the second year of independence by the Mexican provisional government (Iturbide was President of the Regency at the time, but had yet to be proclaimed emperor), stipulating increases in the number of Alcaldes Constitucionales for the cities of Querétaro, Puebla, Guadalajara, and the capital, Mexico City. Following the text of the decree is a contemporary ink annotation dated March 8, 1822, presenting this and other documents to the Ayuntamiento of Presidio de Rio Grande, signed and rubriced by Antonio Elozua. This address delivered on Oct. 31, 1792, by Léger-Félicité Sonothax, recently arrived in Saint Domingue in September with the role of civil commissioner concerns local popular society. It stands against the atmosphere of proscription and illegal violence that was favored by a faction of the local "patriots." A rare Saint Domingue imprint, not in OCLC or the French Union Catalogue

A good copy. The third edition of this work on presidential succession in Mexico by Madero, who served as President of the country from 1911 to 1913. The work first appeared in 1908; this third printing is a copy of the second edition of 1909. The text has been reprinted numerous times since it was first published, with editions published in 1958, 1960, 1963, 1976, and 1986. An English translation appeared in 1990. Madero was the son of an elite established family who became involved in revolutionary politics in Mexico after observing the economic and social conditions found under Mexico's long-time dictator Porfirio Díaz. An outstanding and appealing Manila imprint published by the Jesuits at their press in 1735. Visually, the titlepage is quite striking, with the title itself, four small woodcuts of winged angels at each corner, and a number of vine leaf ornaments all within a frame composed of varied tools. The tract itself is a response to an argument published by Ysidoro de Arévalo, stating that the Governor of Manila in the absence of the Archbishop did not plan to contest the requests of Royal treasury officers and assessors, and to introduce himself into the process of appointing and confirming chaplains for the Spanish fleets, galleons, and other military ships in the area.
