An account of distress in the manufacturing districts and particularly the effects of the Cotton Famine brought on by the American Civil War.

Manchester, John Heywood, 1906, first edition in book form, pp. 314, (2). Original decorative cloth, spine ends slightly bumped, but a very good, bright copy. Pencil name on title page.

Manchester University Press,1904, first edition,pp.vii, 309. A few small marks to the front cover, head and tail of spine a bit bumped, but very sound in the original cloth. Stamp of the Free Trade Union on the front endpaper, but no other marks. Includes a useful and detailed bibliography.

Manchester,Chetham Society,1934, first edition,small 4to,pp.vii,175,viii, frontispiece portrait of Fleetwood Barton and her mother. Very good in the original cloth which has faded to the spine as usual. Chetham Society publications, New Series,vol 91. Although titled volume 1, part 1, no further parts were published and this is complete in itself with an extensive index. Scarce, as few copies were printed owing to the declining membership of the Society at this time.

Manchester, Chetham Society, 1859, two volumes, small 4to, pp.cxviii, 96,97-333. Tiny amount of rubbing to spine ends, but a very good, tight set in the original cloth. Illustrated with 7 plates of arms and armour which have some very light foxing. The information is chiefly derived from the Shuttleworth MSS at Gawthorpe Hall. Chetham Society, First Series, Vols 49-50.

Original cloth, spine very dull ( as usual with this particular Chetham volume ), front cover stained and old evidence of damp to margins of first few leaves and small area of edge of text block. Huddersfield Nine parts published in Huddersfield between 1940 and 1945. Believed to be a complete set. Original card covers, general signs of use, some wear to spines, some foxing and marks from rusting staples. Still a very sound, useable set. 5 parts have inscriptions from the author and some have the bookplate of Edward Law of Lindley. Very scarce as a set.

Bookplate of Sir Edward W Watkin, the great railway entrepreneur who became chairman of nine different railway companies.
