New York: Hastings House, 1949 First edition. Limited to 1000 numbered copies. Edited by Joyce Rockwood Muench from the original manuscript. 63pp. Original boards, paper labels on spine and front cover. A very fine copy with publisher's slipcase. "One of the most valuable records of 1850" (Mattes). Gives an especially good account of the destruction of the old Mormon Winter Quarters on the west bank of the Missouri. At the age of 32, Kilgore, his father, and a small company set out for California from Keokuk, Iowa. They followed the North Platte route and entered California via the Humboldt and Carson rivers. They eventually reached Hangtown. The vast majority of Kilgore's journal is devoted to the overland trek. He does provide a concluding entry describing life and happenings in Sacramento, the Squatter Riots, ranching and agriculture, Indians, and the gold mines. [Kurutz: 376]..
