Printed errata sheet loosely inserted. = A detailed and authoritative monograph by the Russian palaeontologist and malacologist Viktor Nikolaevich Shimanskii (1916-1997). Not only does it include Carboniferous species and genera (many well-preserved and not descreibed earlier), but also extant members of the Nautiloidea, with notes and illustrations of their shells and anatomy. Published in the Institute's Trudy, number 115. In Russian. Slight fraying and chipping to spine top, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare.

With a beautiful armorial book plate of Ramsden "fortiter in re" (Resolute in deed") on the front pastedown. ADDED: two very nice contemporary postcards with views on "Kinchinjuga" by Das Studio, Mount Pleasant Road, Darjeeling. Spine a bit sunned, otherwise a good copy.

Gilt title on spine, and original printed wrappers. = Interesting lists of books and periodicals on natural history. The books are grouped alphabetically by author, the periodicals and maps by country. The Nachtrag has a preface by H. Willers. ADDED: the 2 pp. (folded) Bibliotheksordnung of the Naturhistorischen Vereins zu Bonn. The main work with a stamp of Anton Raky on the title page, otherwise a very good clean and well-bound copy, the Nachtrag with former owners name written on front wrapper and random annotations, otherwise good. A rare, complete set.

Published in the series, Schriften der Wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft in Straßburg, volume 27. Uncut. In a near mint condition.

Stuttgart, Schweizerbart, 1964-1981. 12 parts in eight. 8vo format (ca. 25.0 x 17.0 cm). With thousands of pages and figures. Uniform cloth ringbinders with printed titlle on the spines. = The introduction to the last part states "With this fourth acritarch volume, we have compiled accessible published information on 1217 different "species" of acritarchs, tasmanitids and leiospheres, and similar organic-walled, presumably phytoplanktic microfossils" The parts on dinoflagellates contain even more species. A very good, clean set. Rarely found complete. Former owner's name or stamp on a few titles; a few corrections and other annotations, but 99% clean. A very good set.

Frankfurt am Main, Gebrüder Knauer, 1892-1898. Three parts in three. 8vo (24.0 x 15.5 cm). 402 [x, 73; x, 140; ix, 160] pp. Original uniform printed wrappers. = This is the complete coverage of the herpetological collection of the Senckenberg Museum, which survived WWII. Oscar Boettger's most important herpetological contribution is far more than just a series of catalogues, as many new observations are included, as well as the description of many new species, and several new genera. Small circular label on the front wrappers, otherwise a very good, clean set. Complete sets are rare. Vanzolini I, pp. 165, 178 (part II and III).

Magdeburg, Creutz, 1901. 8vo (18.1 x 12.5 cm). Full-colour frontispiece (tissue-guarded); 94, [ii] pp.; 34 text engravings (several page-sized), and six unnumbered b/w plates. Original green buckram with gilt title on the spine and small herpetological vignette and gilt title on the front board. Printed endpapers. Marbled edges. = A very rare - currently not on the internet and no auction records - well-illustrated work by the German herpetologist Hans Geyer (1871-1958). "Für seine Verdienste auf dem Gebiet der Vivarienkunde erhielt er den Klingelhöffer-Preis" (DBE). Illustrations include mainly animals, and some terrarium plants, equipment, etc. Definitely much rarer than the author's Katechismus für Aquarienliebhaber. The endpapers contain information on similar works by the same publisher. Tissue guard spotted, otherwise in near mint condition. We have never seen a better copy, anywhere. DBE 3, p. 808. Neither in Adler nor in Nissen.

Green buckram with gilt title on the spine. = The American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) wrote a series of biographies and bibliographies of American malacological authors in the series, Occasional Papers on Mollusks, published by the Museum of Comparative Zoology, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a basis for these papers, he accumulated the published works of these malacologists in one or more bound, chronologically arranged, convolutes, often adding previous biographies, obituaries, etc. He sometimes used original offprints or excerpts - this is certainly true for many of the more obscure works - and also photocopies of texts already contained elsewhere in his vast library, e.g., in serials such The Nautilus, Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, and the Proceedings of the United States National… Read More

Large 8vo size (24.1 x 16.4 cm). 60 [20; 20; 20] folded leaves, each with two (recto, verso) or more hand-coloured illustrations, several heightened with silver. Original near uniform hand-coloured pictorial soft covers. = A breathtakingly beautiful, inspiring collection of hand-coloured wood engravings by the Japanese artist Keika Hasegawa (active in the late 19th and early 20th century). The very colourful designs are in various styles: some are pictorial (e.g. a harbour scene; a boat race in "drone"-view), while others show flowers, leaves, feathers, and animals in various degrees of abstraction, often using bold and unexpected but well-balanced colours. The bookblocks and covers are original. A very good set.

Norwich, T. E. Gunn, pre 1923. Taxidermy cased (41 x 31 x 17 cm) in naturalistic setting. Black wooden case with glass front; interior painted light blue. = A fine, wonderfully preserved, stuffed and cased specimen of a female common kestrel, Falco tinnunculus Linnaeus. [German: Turmfalke; French: faucon crécerelles; Dutch: torenvalk]. This falcon is one of the most successful birds-of-prey in the temperate regions of the Old World, occurring in a wide variety of landscapes. It preys on mice and other small animals. "The kestrel was once used to drive and keep away pigeons" (Wikipedia). This specimen probably dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. The case differs from most such cases in having a more detailed and naturalistic setting. This must be the work of the renowned British taxidermist T. E. Gunn. Original uniform red leatherette with gilt title on the spines. In original orange, printed dust jackets. = A seldom-seen complete set of the fourth volume, which is entirely devoted to butterflies and moths. Translations, into English of the original Russian edition, which was published slightly earlier, as parts 117 and 130 of the Keys to the fauna of the USSR, published by the Institute of Zoology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The numbering of the text figures is double, indicating a slightly different arrangement between the Russian and English editions. Some wear to the wrapper edges, otherwise very good, clean, unmarked.

[ii], 160 pp. Original printed wrappers. = The "too good to be understood" thesis of the Swedish mathematical physicist David Enskog (1884-1947), who helped develop the kinetic theory of gases by extending the Maxwell-Boltzmann equations [This paper]. "After undergraduate studies at Uppsala University he received a licentiate degree in physics in 1911, working on gas diffusion under professor Gustaf Granqvist, who was an experimentalist. Enskog did not wish to continue with experimental physics, however, and transferred to Professor Carl Wilhelm Oseen for his Ph.D. From 1913, Enskog worked as a high school teacher in mathematics and physics to support himself and his family, while continuing his research and thesis writing in his free time. Written by the Russian mammalogist Avenir Grigorevitch Tomilin (1912-2000). In Russian. Very well-illustrated. Photos show living and dead animals, and taxonomically important parts (e.g. skulls). An excellent, clean copy.

Original printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen publication with the description and illustration of new and poorly known fish species from the Coral Triangle, and more in particular the seas between Kalimantan and the moluccas, in Indonesia. Written by the Austrian ichthyologist and herpetologist Franz Steindachner (1834-1919). Uncut. Slight soiling to wrappers, otherwise a very good, clean copy.
