[4],27,[1]pp written by Edward Sexby under the pseudonym William Allen and often attributed to Colonel Titus. At one time a parliamentarian and involved in the capture of Charles in 1647 he later became disaffected with Cromwell and wrote the pamphlet Killing No Murder in 1657, arguing that the murder of a tyrant was no murder. He was captured in 1657 on a return visit to England to instigate a rebellion, was interrogated by Cromwell and imprisoned in the tower of London where he died the next year, 1658. A later printing of the first edition of this Soviet cookbook that was written to replace decadent bourgeois cookbooks that existed before the revolution (esp Elena Molokhovets' A Gift to Young Housewives). Despite this, much of the cookbook consists of lavish, sybaritic meals that would have been quite at home in Gilded Age America. Early editions are scarce. A redone continental version of Gillray's famous engraving "The corsican pest" with Napoleon on a fork over the fire defecating - here replaced by the Gallic cock. Beelzebub is shown as a racist African caricature in a Phrygian cap. Dishes of "crocodile soup" "Mahomedan gravy", "favourite Frecnh wine" shown on the right, the imps serve frogs and snakes and the English army hangs in the background. Sheets of paper litter the floor "Invasion of Great Britain", "treachery", "murder" etc. Most of the elements of the print are labeled - Gillray (rightly, I think) believing his allegory to be generally opaque. ca. 14 1/2" x 11", slight foxing, wear at corners.
