New Jersey: Prentice-Hall, 1962 First edition 1962 collectible description of four Afrrican countries: Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana visited by E.R. Braithwaite in 1961. It is noteworthy that South Africa was not included in his itinerary, although he did visit in 1973 and wrote a book about it, Honorary White, named after the status granted him by South Africa so that he could be issued a visa. Braithwaite was born in Guyana to Oxford educated parents. The only job he could find after service with the R.A.F.and a post-war Phd in physics was as a teacher in an eastend London school. His experiences there were the foundation for his not uncontroversial 1959 novel, To Sir, With Love which was made into a film in 1967. Tallin Estonia: Kirjastus Eesti Raamat, 1966 Very attractive book with an arts and crafts look, actually a 1966 reprint of the 1912 novel. Written in Estonian. B/W illustrations plus colour frontispiece and dust jacket. Decorative endpapers with green print stripes. Pea green boards with b/w styllised classroom scene and peach spine with green lettering. Attractive wrap around jacket art in modernised Dickensian style, suitably paralleling the literary style which Kuts, work is said to resemble.It has a Scandinavian look. Title is apparently Estonian for Spring, Luts' first novel. Bookplate on inside front board Edgar Kadak ? cartoon of artist. Pages browning. DJ spine a bit sunned and browned with price tag pull, some edge tears and generally quite brittle from age. Still a very attractive book to look at (or to read if you know Estonian!)

New York: Rand McNally, 1950 1950 "E" edition of this Newbery award winner for 1949, complete with gold foil medallion on dust jacket. Although not in prime condition, this is still a very attractive and impressive book. Dust jacket is clipped and is beautifully illustrated by Wesley Dennis. Upper edge has some chipping, but damage is marginal enough that the dramatic horse's head and horse and rider on the rear panel in the midst of a desert storm still have impact. The red boards are water stained on the edge of both the front and rear board, gilt horse's head and spine lettering are still bright. Decorative endpapers, the front inside cover has prior owner's bookplate, a sand bordered scene of mounted indian buffalo hunters, which seems somewhat compatible. This book came from the estate of a serious horsewoman with a fine collection of books on horses and riding, and is in very good condition, clean and crisp, save the water damage to the boards and the wear on the upper dj… Read More

Back endpaper shows damage where card pocket was removed. There is the odd stray pencil mark on page edge. Otherwise, book is in very good and sturdy condition with good binding and corners intact. All that is left of the dust jacket is one panel summarising the book, which has been glued to the front endpaper.
