This publication, issue 69 of the new series of Trudy geologicheskago komiteta (Works of the Geological Committee), is illustrated with photos of rock and landscape formations.

Moscow, "Pravda", 1934. 8vo. Original grey cloth, lettered and illustrated in red, white, silver and blue, illustrated endpapers; pp. [viii], 406, [2], with mounted frontispiece and nine plates (one in colour), many (several full-page) illustrations in the text, one large colour-printed folding map, 12 leaves printed in red with laudatory text bound in; extremities a little rubbed, internally only light marginal browning. First edition of this celebration of the successful aerial relief mission to save the crew of the icebreaker Cheliuskin, which had been crushed by icepacks near Kolyuchin Island in the Chukchi Sea in February, 1934. The crew escaped and built a makeshift airstrip (which they had to rebuild 13 times) in the hope of a search aircraft spotting them. The pilots involved in the relief mission, which succeded in April, became fêted Soviet heroes, and Marina Tsvetayeva wrote a poem honouring the rescue team.

Illustrated self-wrappers; pp. 22, [2], highly illustrated throughout; rather well preserved; provenance: Estonian library stamp inside front cover, withdrawn. First edition, one of 500 copies printed. This is the German-language celebration of the new Karaganda, relocated after rich coal deposits had been dicuvered and exploited by slave labour. The author, sometime transliterated as Muganov, was a Kazakh novellist and poet. No copy in COPAC.

An important book on Thailand. The author had lived for several years in Bangkok and travelled the surrounding country studying the Thai way of life, food, rites, belief systems, social organisation and the architecture. In the sections on food Young points out the immense number of mobile food booths and the street food culture.

(12.5 x 10.5cm); original white parchment backed florally printed 1930s card covers, handsewn, edges untrimmed; pp. [12]; with 10 delightful handcoloured original pen-and-ink illustrations of the gnome character Button on his travels, with text in manuscript calligraphy beneath; a very nice copy with light dusting to covers, with bruise to lower upper forecorner, a vertical crease to lower cover and also to 2 final leaves, but otherwise very clean. A delightful, and very accomplished, unique, and apparently unpublished, manuscript children's book, in German, completed to professional standards of illustration, about a little gnome called "Button" who sets off to travel the world by various means of transport: a toy train, sailing boat, motor car, and aeroplane but, after an alarming avdenture, returns to his little toadstool home.

A wonderful publication on probably the most important Western resident of Kuwait, next to Captain Shakespear. Lieutenant Colonel Harold Richard Patrick Dickson, his wife Violet, and daughter Zahra Freeth don't need any introduction. The Kuwait historian Al-Habaib visited members of the family in England, interviewed them and had access to family photo albums, all of which is published here for the first time.
