Description:
Tokyo: Rikugunsho,, 1875. Quarto (274 x 181 mm). Original Japanese fukuro-toji, pouch binding, double-punched with green silk, and jute ties, original printed paper wrappers with thin linen spine. 264 hand-coloured plates on 132 Japanese-style double leaves wrappers somewhat damped, rubbed and a little soiled, spine with some chipping, marginal worming towards the rear, almost entirely marginal, very slight encroachment on a few images, but overall very good, plates clean and the colour bright, a number with lightly pencilled annotation in English. First edition of this uncommon catalogue of Meiji Restoration military uniforms, WorldCat, locates just three copies, the National Diet Library, LoC, and University of Michigan. Clearly illustrates how the modernising Japanese Army adopted uniforms resembling those of their American Civil War advisors, and the French Third Empire. Early in the 1870s the Meiji Emperor and Saga Saneharu, his Minister of Justice, issued a series of edicts establishing… Read more

Description:
[c.1930s]. A fine example of Wain's kaleidoscope cats Original gouache watercolour on paper (188 x 128 mm). Glazed and framed. Stab holes visible at top edge of sheet, else in fine condition, the colours bright and entirely unfaded. A rare, superbly coloured "kaleidoscope" cat by the beloved "asylum artist" Louis Wain, presumed to have been created during his later years at Napsbury Asylum when his fluctuating psychological state was profoundly transforming his art. In this case, the image retains the realistic form of a mischievous cat but with the psychotic gleam and unnaturally bright colouring typical of the artist's more abstracted work, straddling the divide between the two facets of Wain's artistry; a "flashback" or precursor of an altered state. Despite his eventual fame as "the man who drew cats", Wain (1860-1939) regarded himself as a "dog artist" at the start of his career, providing numerous spreads for journals such as the Illustrated London News reporting on kennel club and dog shows.… Read more

Vienna: Verlag von Julius Springer,, 1934. Octavo. Original brown cloth, printed paper label to spine. Label a little soiled. A very good copy. First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Mit hertzlichen GrĂŒssen ĂŒberreicht vom Verfasser", together with a pencilled note "8/34" possibly the recipient's note of presentation date.
