The first wave of Indian immigrants arrived in South Africa as indentured labourers, followed by a second wave known as Passenger Indians - individuals who had paid their own fare. Being the last wave of immigrants to enter a British colony, the Indians saw themselves, and were perceived by others, as a homogeneous group originating from India. The apartheid state as well as anti-apartheid organisations saw advantages in this. Author analyses this construct and shows how Indian identity is being transformed to meet the challenges of the new democratic South Africa.

The story revolves around a rural guest farm and the that take place as told by the main protagonist, a boy named Fabian. The story takes place in 1960 and features a diverse cast of characters, from Fabian's lesbian aunt, Geertruida, who travels masquerading as a man, to a doctor who is treating one of his patients with LSD. This was translated into English as Kikuyu.
