[Battle Creek Mich.]: W.K. Kellogg, 1909. Stapled, tri-fold booklet (21 x 15 cm.). Second issue. A slice or metamorphic book promoting Kellogg's cereal, with six flaps on the central panel allowing the reader to mix and match the circus animals' upper, mid, and lower sections. The rear panel of the booklet, depicting a dancing youngsters and a boy in a wagon drawn by a rooster, advertises Kellogg's Toasted Corn Flakes, and includes a variation on the children's verse, "To market, to market, jiggedy jog... A slightly earlier issue included a back panel depicting the nursery rhyme the "Old Woman in the Shoe". While the booklets state they were "patented Jan. 15, 1907", none appear to have been issued before 1909. Distributed through grocers in exchange for two box tops, it was the first cereal premium produced; soon after, it became available as a mail order premium for two box tops, or 10¢. In one form or another, the Kellogg's Funny Jungleland Moving Pictures book remained in print as a premium… Read More

Nairobi: Taylor Advertising Ltd, 1964. Quarto-sized, 96 pages. Text illustrations (partly colored), additional illustrations contained in advertising matter. Index. IRST EDITION. An interesting cookbook published in Kenya in the early postcolonial era. The cuisine is unequivocally more British than African, despite the mention of local fresh water fish like Nile perch and tilapia and the inclusion of a section on curries and samosas, but there's nary a trace of a Black African face in the illustrations and advertisements. Original color pictorial wrappers. Light cover soil and wear, otherwise very good.

Description:
Chicago: Rand, McNally & Company, 1885. Duodecimo (14.25 x 11 cm), 104, [2] pages. Advertisements. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. More than three hundred short recipes, with a stark emphasis on meat, including game, and how to serve it. The Kitchen was foremost an advertising vehicle for Rand, McNally, showing off to those who kept books in their homes the utilitarian pleasures of modern engraving and electrotypography, available at an affordable price. Bitting attributes the compilation, without explanation, to Mrs. Orange Judd, possibly as a result of consulting Rand, McNally records of one sort or another. Harriet Stewart Judd (1823-1907) might well have sought editorial work in Chicago after assuming a teaching post at Rockford Female Seminary, during the years that her husband was establishing his own Chicago publishing house. Orange Judd (1822-1892) was a peripatetic chemist, businessman, and agricultural journalist, who had served as editor of American Agriculturist as well as agricultural editor… Read More

London: Charles Griffin and Company, Limited, 1895. Octavo (20 x cm.), vii, 51, 32 pages. Illustrated with one leaf of plates, one folded chart, and a color frontispiece. Publisher's catalogue at end. FIRST EDITION. The author was chief engineer to the Scottish Boiler Insurance and Engine Inspection Company of Glasgow, and the author of a popular book on Steam Boilers. His attention was specially directed to the explosion of kitchen boilers by the unusual succession of such accidents that occurred in England and Scotland during January 1894. Thirty-eight explosions occurred during five days of cold weather, resulting in twelve deaths and in injuries to thirty-three persons (The Locomotive, March, 1894). Munro's solution, a simple safety valve, was widely adopted in boiler applications well beyond the kitchen. A fine copy, in publisher's pebbled burgundy cloth, gilt-titled on the front panel. Scarce. In the preface, Jekyll writes, "it is often found that a good tradition..., painstakingly acquired, has vanished beyond recovery, and that the pleasant things we enjoyed in youth, the familiar foods which added to our travels abroad, or the spécialité of some clever lost cook, have all be irrevocably down Time's rolling stream" (page viii).
