Kai Lung is married to Hwa-mei, the Golden Mouse, and when he returns from a journey he finds his house burned and his wife stolen by Ming-Shu, his arch enemy and leader of a rebel band. An elusive title especially so in the dust jacket.

Ramon Adams did not know of this, the first edition. He cites the same publisher and place, but the 1890 edition as the first. This book went through several reprints and created a minor uproar for the barbarous conditions it exposed. Some minor rubbing to the spine ends and extremities. else a very good copy of this rare first edition.

Hale was a clergyman and served for many years. Among his numerous books he is most remembered for THE MAN WITHOUT A COUNTRY, published anonymously in the "Atlantic" magazine in 1863. He advises that the use of the "z" in the word "Kanzas" is preferred by him as the "z" sound is more accurate in pronouncing the state's name and the spelling with the "s" replacing the "z" is too "fashionable."
